I'm glad that this was my first class at UCLA. Professor Lawrence is a great teacher.

The lectures were engaging, funny, and deeply rewarding. Readings from the primary text (Aristotle's Ethics) were explored both in class and in additional articles posted online. We were assigned two 4-6 page papers, each of which accounted for half of our grade. Lawrence was always helpful both during and after the writing process, encouraging us to visit him during office hours to discuss our ideas, as well as leaving notes for improvement. He even talked with me over the phone about my paper when I was unable to make it to office hours.

Overall, I would recommend this class to anyone interested in practical philosophy.

brilliant teacher. Professor Lawrence definitely made me fall in love with Philosophy, I always looked forward to attending this class; his efforts to explain a point are extremely funny .. he is funny but also gets his thoughts over in many different ways so what seems complicated originally is made very easy, his handouts are also very good and if you read these and follow the other recommendations he makes you will do well.. I notice comments from other students that he tries to answer too many questions in class I disagree he had to continually tell one student to come and see him after lectures so it did not disrupt the class - he has the ability to really 'get the point' across.. while being amusing..

I think Professor Lawrence is one of the brightest in the UCLA Philosophy Dept. I'm not going to lie; a lot of students dislike him and his teaching manner. My suggestion is that they stop bickering and murmuring between their teeth and actually learn the material presented in class. If you can't follow along during the lecture its because your a dumbass and expected to go to class without reading the assignment. Otherwise his lecture would have been very straightforward. Professor Lawrence definitely made me fall in love with Virtue Ethics, which I didn't understand until he became my professor. I would always look forward to attending this class; it was an honor to be able to attend the Phil 151A lecture during Fall 2010. Bottom line: take this professor if you are serious about learning and leading a virtous life. Tip: sit at the front so that he becomes familiar with you, it really really works, trust me!

Overrated. His lectures are incredibly boring and disorganized. His handwriting is about as illegible as a five year old's. His handouts are just as incomprehensible as his lectures.

Don't take this guy's class. The people who gave him high ratings are probably just really happy with the grades they received. The truth is that most of my classmates have no idea what he's talking about in lecture.

But if you do end up taking his class, no need to go to lecture. You're better off just reading the book and attending section.
