I think this class would be better listed under a film class, as I came in expecting to discuss music more in depth in a historical and social context as it was listed under a music history course. I found the lectures to be a little hard to get through and the discussion section unhelpful/a waste of time. The material was interesting but not that enthralling and I found myself dragging myself through the last few weeks of class. The professor wasn't very engaging during lectures and often went on tangents. Overall, wouldn't really recommend this class.

I took this class as a GE, since I've always had interest in both music and film. I expected this course to be one of the most interesting classes in my schedule, since it seems like you basically just watch movies and analyze them. DONT BE FOOLED !! somehow this class makes movies like Beauty and the Beast and Moonlight extremely boring. There is little to no organization in the lectures, making the trip to class not worth the effort. Don't even get me started on the discussion sections- A COMPLETE waste of time. They're designed to give you "supple feedback" for your essay (there's 3 grades: midterm, final, essay). However, my TA just ranted about random movies having nothing to do with the curriculum. In fact, the section before the midterm, this mans really said "forget about the midterm, fck school, go party". I would not recommend this class whatsoever, a complete waste of my time.

I've watched less than 100 movies in my life, have 0 musical knowledge, and hardly knows anything about American culture.

So naturally, I struggled to grasp the concepts the professor teaches about music in films in general. I skipped some lectures and barely talked in discussion. However, the midterm and final exams are very easy (100% on both) and my TA was understanding. The hardest part was the essay which took so much researching especially if you can't analyze music.

In the end, I appreciate the diversity of films that came from various countries we had to watch and learned so much about music. It was worth my time.

Awesome class if you are interested in the material. The class focuses a lot on the history of sound and music in film. Assignments are watching a weekly movie, a short weekly journal, a midterm, final, and a paper on a film of your choice. I had a great time learning the material, and it definitely changed the way I view films now. Attendance in discussion was mandatory. Writing (esp. the exams) was graded pretty leniently IMO

Actual Course taken: Music History 7

Go to every lecture and review the study guides before the exam and you should be fine. Memorize the directors and composers, and figure out why each study guide term is important/relevant and how they are connected (they're ordered in appearance of the lecture, so they're pretty much all consecutive in relation). 3 multiple choice exams (50/40/40 questions respectively) which were fair.

5 page paper (double spaced) that is of your choosing. Easy if you have a good topic, annoying if you randomly choose a topic without much foresight of a meaningful discussion/analysis to be had. 3 due dates: outline, rough draft (2 pages), final draft.

Extra credit assignment worth up to additional 3%, which is extremely helpful since grading is on an absolute scale and not a curve. Did it the day it was due and ended up with 2.5%.

I have no experience in music theory or playing an instrument. Class was interesting and not time-consuming. With extra credit, ended up with an A. Highly recommend it for a fairly easy GE.

Her class is very interesting and addressed overlooked concepts of film and music. Her homework consisted of watching weekly movies and one overall essay. Her lectures were a little long but we watched clips in class. Overall, the information was presented in an interesting and clear way that was also interactive and entertaining.

TAKE THIS CLASS ESPECIALLY WITH DR. REPLOGLE!!!!

Dr. Replogle is an awesome professor! I thoroughly enjoyed this class and took it for my Visual and Performing Arts GE. The way this class is graded is by these parameters (at least for my quarter):

35% Final Paper (10% thesis, 25% content)
25% Final
20% Midterm
20% Discussion (10% Participation, 10% Writing Prompts based off readings and lectures)

Near the end of the quarter, the professor also offers an E.C assignment that can boost your overall final grade in the class a total of 2% max depending on how well you do it.

In class, progessor Replogle would give an overview of the content and each week we are also responsible for a number of listenings and readings. These readings and listenings are VERY important as they are utilized on both midterm and final! The lectures themselves are also very important as the exams require you to recall IMPORTANT facts about each song (so you can't just B.S your way out of this).

It might sound somewhat overwhelming but the class is truely enjoyable. It really doesn't even feel like a class because the readings are easy, the songs are pretty fun to listen to (especially songs after the midterm!), and the professor is obviously very passionate about the History of Rock n' Roll! You grow to have an appreciation of music and see just how much gender, race, sexuality, technology, and a multitude of other factors transform music into what it is today especially in regards to Rock N' Roll.

Also, special shout out to Candance for being such an amazing T.A!!!! Definitely try to get her if you can.

Easy class. For the midterm and final, you have to memorize ~50 song titles, as well as the artist, year of recording, and three significant facts about each one. That was the hardest part. One 6 page paper at the end of the quarter, which was super easy to write (I just did it about my favorite band). If I didn't completely bomb the midterm, I would've gotten an A in the class. My TA was a homie and was incredibly helpful. Shoutout to Wade Dean Fulton, you tha man!

Fun class, but lots of material. You start rock 'n' roll history in the 1920's, learning about blues and country, and move forward all the way until the 90's ending with alternative. In between, you learn almost everything there is to learn about rock 'n' roll (or as much as is possible in 10 weeks). In terms of assignments, there are both weekly readings of ~30-40 pages (so buying the book is mandatory) and Spotify playlists of ~20 songs to listen to per week.

The midterm and final are basically memorization; the first section is listening to a 1-minute excerpt of a song and stating the name, artist, date, and 3 salient facts about it. The second section is a short answer portion based only on lectures. The third section is an essay, for which you cannot get full credit for unless you use information from the weekly readings. However, Dr. Replogle gives you the prompts ahead of time, and selects 2-3 to put on the exam. That means you can outline the prompts as a way to study and pick out which sections of the reading to cite, so the readings are really only mandatory to do on time for the quizzes in the first few discussions (which are also far too easy; I didn't read for one of them and still got full points by making stuff up).

The prompt for the paper is vague, but that means you can basically pick your topic. The TA's are all music fans who love reading about that kind of stuff, so as long as you make it interesting you'll be fine.

Overall, easy class with fun material and you get to learn a lot about music and artists such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Elvis, and basically anyone else who was famous in the 20th century rock scene.

The class overall is fun and the TAs are all passionate about different aspects of music. The midterm and final require a lot of memorization of dates, song titles, and artist names but its pretty easy to get an A with some effort, especially with the paper (where you get to choose the topic).
