Quarter: Winter 2019

People complaining about this man's accent are really trying to cover up the fact they didn't do as well as they wanted to purely due to their own incompetence. Pham's lectures are fast-paced, but he goes over the clicker questions very well, which are all that really matter. I never attended his office hours but every time I asked him something after class, he was nothing but kind and extremely helpful. The LS Core Curriculum have a specific way of explaining problems and he does a great job of explaining what type of knowledge is expected of us. I would go to his lectures to figure out what type of material will be tested and go to your TA's office hours instead because they offer much more personal help.

Dr.Pham is SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR. You will be teaching a lot of the material to yourself so make sure to make use of the preclass worksheets and reading guides. These will help you focus on the important material since launchpad has soooo much to take in. Pham is a fast lecturer, but if you ask him to slow down or go over something again, he is always more than happy to do it. He also encourages questions like no other! He clearly (and I'm talking crystal clear) cares about his students :') Cellular biology can be complicated, but he will make sure you know he is there as a welcoming resource.

The flipped classroom format of this class means it relies on self-learning a lot through assigned readings/quizzes on the online textbook. Each week there are videos, textbook pages, and mini-quizzes (2-6 questions), which make up a fair amount of points (the class is out of 702 points). Staying on top of these is a must - you fall behind and it's really tough to get back on your feet. They are also super easy points that might push you from an A- to an A at the end.

The tests are quite difficult but Pham teaches you well on how to think through problems -- the questions force you to make connections with what you already know, which is why you need to stay on top of readings. There are also CLC sessions (kinda like office hours but led by Learning Assistants) that are of utmost important if you want to do well in the class. They provide worksheets that are of similar difficulty to the tests and the LAs help you walk through the problems and make connections. A lot of people who didn't do well in this class didn't go to these. They are a MUST.

Pham himself is a great guy. He makes funny jokes once in awhile and cares a LOT about his students. His accent takes a bit to get used to, but it's entirely understandable. He could be a bit more helpful when explaining clicker questions in class, but he will always expand more after class or in his office hours.

Professor Pham is one of my favorite professors that I had last quarter. You can tell that he genuinely cares about his students and he is always a very helpful resource. This class has a lot of pre-class work of taking notes and reading on LaunchPad, it is a lot of work but it's manageable. The 7 series tests are pretty challenging, but an A is definitely attainable in this class.

I was super stoked to take this class because Pham has one of the highest ratings for this course, however I felt a little disappointed. His accent + the mic + his mask made it very hard to understand him, and although that's an uncontrollable situation, I found that if I zoned out for 2 seconds I could no longer follow along. As someone who sometimes struggles with maintaining focus for extensive periods of time, I ended up learning more from my TA and review sessions than I did actual lectures.

This class was still very interesting and there were still a lot of extra credit opportunities to help bump final grades up. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! You won't regret it; grades are based on total points, so those extra few points can make or break your grade.

He is popular for a reason. Best thing about him is that his class and especially the review sessions are organized and timely. He cares about students in OHs too. Great professor. Homework and stuff should be all the same regardless who you take.

This class is def very content-heavy, and focuses on cell and molecular bio and can get confusing and difficult if you don't have a strong foothold in it from high school + don't consistently study and figure out your weak spots. Exams have individual and group phases and your final grade for those are the averages, so that should def help your grade if your group is good (mine was and I ended up getting very close to perfect on the group section). Pham is amazing and super nice and responsive to emails. To succeed in this class: DO NO FALL BEHIND. It's really hard to get back on track and there's so much content to learn. The grading scheme for this class makes it easier to get an A, so as long as you understand the Launchpad + Launchpad quiz/exams, Clickers, Discussion, and PLF sheets, you are more than prepared to do really well in this class. Good luck!

Dr. Pham is a fantastic professor who cares deeply about his students and their success. His lectures are engaging and complete with cute anecdotes about his wife, and he is more than accommodating when the need arises. Whenever students have questions during lectures, Dr. Pham will answer the question in depth or invite others in the class to try to help, but makes sure that the student who asked the question understood before moving on. He offers many extra credit opportunities to boost your grade, and the group portions of the exams are very helpful. The tests are heavily concept-based, but with the lectures, discussion sections and launchpad assignments, students are usually very prepared. I enjoyed the class with Dr. Pham and highly encourage others to take LS7A with him.

I felt like this was a lot of review from AP Bio, and there is so much LaunchPad work. You do learn a lot of material, and the pace is pretty quick. That said, if you're reading this you probably have to take LS7A, and the curriculum is all the same for every class. Professor Pham is nice and helpful, and he sends out reminders when assignments are due which has saved me a couple times. His explanations of clicker questions are crucial for the exams. I liked this class, but it probably doesn't matter too much which professor you get.

The material covered is very interesting, but the pacing and the flipped classroom model is very tough with no A-levels/AP background in biology. I would highly recommended trying to get Maloy he is very composed and engaging as a lecturer I would sometimes do the Pham clicker questions then attend Maloy's lecture and found it clearer. Pham is a very nice person but not the clearest teacher even if he insists you stop him to ask questions that obviouslt doesn't quite fit the format of a 400 person lecture. Overall the lecture is porbably the least important part of this class, try not to fall behind on launchpad (easier said) and attend discussions and you should be fine regardless of who you get.
