Fall 2017 - Would definitely take this class again. Professor Speer is an amazing lecturer and is young so he understands students better than older professors. The material is a tad confusing but he does a good job of getting you to read and comprehend through homework questions that are very specific to the readings!

Fall 2020 - TAKE THIS CLASS! As a transfer student I was nervous about the transition from a Community College to a 4-year University. Professor Speer made sure that my experience in this class was a positive one. I will admit some of the readings were difficult, but Speer went over them in class and discussed it until everyone understood. Such a caring and understanding person in light of everything going on. I really wanted to take him for Sociology 182 for Winter 2020, but the class filled up so fast, and rightfully so. Speer is hands down the BEST professor in this department. Honestly, the BEST professor at UCLA!! Also if you're good he'll show his dogs Bogart and Nyla.

Winter 2022 - This is my second time having Speer. His lectures are a bit dry, but he does really make the effort to ensure students understand what he is trying to teach. He's a nice, helpful professor. The lectures are very consistent. The tests were not overly difficult, but not exactly the best way to test theory (in my opinion). The readings were manageable, the homework was helpful in understanding the readings, and the structure of this class was consistent which was nice. I'd recommend Speer to other students, but I didn't find this class as engaging and interesting as I think it could have been. I loved 101 and was very excited for 102, but it was a bit boring.

Spring 2021 - They changed Soc 110 to Sociohistorical Methods, a methods course, and this was the first time it had been taught in this way. It was a lot of work and prof Speer was still working out the best way to teach the class. There was a midterm, a final, weekly readings of papers that used historical methods (sometimes really dense/boring), homeworks about the readings that were only graded on completeness, a final paper, and discussion section was worth 10% of the grade. You got to choose your topic for the final paper which was good. Overall I enjoyed the class and thought Speer was really great and lectures were engaging. It's a good way to get the methods requirement out of the way especially since there's no math.

The material was very interesting and applicable to what is currently happening today. We had weekly readings and reading questions to turn in. The questions helped me understand the main points of the readings. There was supposed to be a midterm, but he canceled it last minute and instead we had a cumulative final. We had to write an 8 paged literature review on a question we created in the beginning of the quarter. The final exam was take home.
