I really enjoyed this class with Prof Larkin. The lectures were straightforward and he gave study guides for the midterms and final. All the exams were based on lectures making it easy to study for. Labs are 20% of your grade and are fairly easy to complete. There's also a textbook but you don't necessarily need to read it as long as you pay attention during lecture. Larkin is fun and really cares about the material and his students. My TA was Jon and he's really chill and approachable. I'd definitely recommend this class and my TA.

Astro 3 is a decent science GE, as a north campus major science isn't really my forte but if you put in enough work in studying you can do alright in the class. Grades are determined mostly by two midterms and a final which are very important to study for, Professor Larkin provides very helpful study guides for these and the lecture slides and recordings are also available. I would recommend attending the lectures regularly and reading parts of the textbook to supplement notes when studying for the tests. The labs aren't too hard but they often took a long time and were extremely tedious.

I loved this class SO MUCH. Probably going to be one of my favorites here at UCLA. The textbook is super reasonably priced (I barely even looked at it though, you don't really need to), the tests are super straightforward if you do the study guides, and Professor Larkin is so sweet honestly. It's easy to get an A as long as you go to the labs and do the study guides, you don't even have to go to lectures, I stopped showing up after week one, watched the recorded lectures, and did pretty well! Seriously loved this class cause I love astronomy so much. Little math is needed! Take itttt!!!

This class was fun at some points and hard to understand at others. You definitely have to study hard in order to get an A, as for me, it wasn't as easy. Midterms were not difficult for me, but the final really got me because there is so much to remember and a surprising amount of mathematical rules that are easy to mix up. Would I take this again? Maybe. Prof Larkin is at least engaging in the lectures which is a plus. Labs take a long time and sometimes require working beyond the two hour lab time. This was in no case a bad class or bad professor or too much work. If you want that A tho, you gotta earn it.

Extremely Interesting class!!!! Professor Larkin is very humorous and is very good at keeping things light and engaging!!! He is the single most eloquent and clear professor I have. Although speaks quite fast and requires your full attention. The tests are easy.

Quite easy class but much more work than I expected for a GE if you choose to do the readings. I started to barely skim them at the end because they were too time-consuming. Overall would recommend for an easy GE.

Prof. was super nice and understanding about everything going on in the pandemic. Lectures were recorded and fast-paced with a small quiz (3-6 Q's) each week. The workload might feel like a lot at times, but it was manageable. We were supposed to read multiple, long chapters from the textbook each week, and there were 2 midterms. All exams were multiple-choice, which was great!

I struggled in the class, but a lot of students did well, so I wouldn't say that the class nor the prof. were a problem. I was not very good with the labs, they were physics/math heavy.

Bottom Line: Cool prof, lots of work, you might struggle in labs if you're not the best at math, but nice class!

the class was very challenging for a freshman, I got very lucky because of the coronavirus. Larkin curved the grade in the class and the final was easier than it was originally planned to be. I recommend taking this class only if you are looking into the major if you're attempting to fulfill a science GE with the lab take GEO 5 of PHYSCI 5. The class was very interesting but the exams are difficult, however, he is a good lecturer. The class is also time-consuming because there are a lot of readings and you have to be very comfortable with the concepts of the class because the exam options are often very similar.
