Stigler is amazing! Such a clear lecturer and the TAs, Laura and Mary, were amazing as well. His online textbook (free) is very helpful and although it is flipped classroom, he still goes over enough in class where it isn't dependent on you understanding all the material on your own. He drops 1/4 of the quizzes, and has two grading schemes based on whether you want to come to class and have participation count or not. Although you are given a cheat sheet for every exam, but through doing the homework and exercises you start to memorize most of the codes which made the final seem like a breeze since you do it so often.

Take this class with Stigler! He was really helpful and explained the concepts really well. Also the TAs (Mary and Laura) were amazing and so nice. They were always patient, even when having to explain the same concepts over and over.

The thing about Psych 100A is you do most of the learning from the online textbook so if you stay on top of the chapters, this class should be pretty easy. Also, the homework from the online textbook is just for completion not correctness. I would suggest reviewing over it or taking notes on it to help with studying for the quizzes/final. We had four quizzes and the lowest grade was dropped. There was no midterm, but a final. I got A/A+ on all my quizzes and a B+ my final so I got an A on the class. There were also extra credit opportunities. Overall, I would recommend Stigler and don't have any complaints.

Wowwww.. Where to even begin with Stigler.. I came into this class scared as hell because math has never been my thing and the name of this course freaked me out, but it is a required class for me so I had to dive into it. I can honestly say that Prof. Stigler is one of THE best professors on campus (alongside Jay Phelan for LS 15). Stigler really does invest time and effort to help his students.. he truly does and it shows. He welcomes everyone to his office hours and he is truly welcoming-- I felt I had some pretty dumb questions but he constantly assured me that no question was "dumb." He explained to the full extent. The TAs are OUTSTANDING -- specifically Gerald and Mary. They have an insane amount of patience and dedication to helping students out.. I wish every TA at UCLA was as understanding, patient, passionate, dedicated, committed as these two. Back to Stigler-- his curriculum is just great. Initially, I thought that because majority was based on an online system (Canvas), it'd be a disaster bc who really learns from a computer vs a teacher? Well, Stigler did excellent at integrating the online modules to his lectures. He is just such a kind man. When a teacher enjoys their job/is committed to teaching appropriately, it SHOWS.. and I saw this all the way through with Stigler. He did the most to help us understand the topics. I feel that if it was some other professor teaching this course, I would have been bald by the end of the quarter from pulling my hairs out. Stigler, if you are reading this.. I acknowledge you for your hard work.. Trust me, it does not go unrecognized. Anyone sitting in your lectures is blessed. You are a professor who gets his job done the right way. I respect you.

Very good professor with an amazing course. It has backwards teaching (learning at home through a FREE website (bless up) called Canvas, which is similar to LaunchPad for you fellow scientists), and then we reinforce the learning in lecture. Personally, I enjoy this method more because it means I get to skip lectures, which is amazing of course. No sections/lectures are mandatory except the discussion sections every TWO weeks to take the 5 quizzes throughout the quarter. The material is very easy to understand if you just do the Canvas homework. We learn some R language coding, but it's very friendly and he lets us even have a cheatsheet with all of the R syntax and functions, but we don't really need it for quizzes. I would definitely take his classes again.

Also, I can't stop thinking about how much he sounds like one of the few voice actors in Skyrim lol (the voice actor for Belethor, specifically)

I loved how Stigler was very concerned with making sure the students understand the topic conceptually. He gives a bunch of extra credit, especially for the final. He rounds minuses up to the full letter grade (so A- would be an A). My main criticism for this class was that I absolutely hated the backwards classroom teaching style (we learn on the free online textbook and reviewed in class). It made me feel extremely disconnected from the classroom, as the lectures weren't anything important or needed. Went to class max of 8 times all quarter, and didn't take stats class before

He gave us free notebooks to take our notes in, and we could use them on quizzes and exams. He made his own online interactive textbook that he tested on us, and it was also used to complete our homework assignments. He gave us all the tools we needed, and I can't think of a nicer, better professor than him. Definitely recommend.

They revamped 100A to be more conceptual. The coding component of the class is beginner-friendly. The way you're tested on it in class is that the question will usually show a data table and you'll be asked how to graph or analyze it. The choices will be lines of code. You're given a class journal where you're expected to write your notes in. It's allowed to be used during the bi-weekly quizzes and even the final! All the TA's were friendly and helpful. Stigler is also friendly and he displays the enthusiasm to help struggling students. Looking at past exams of 100A, the new 100A is definitely a lot easier. If you forgot some concepts in Stats 10 that's fine because you'll learn it again here.

I absolutely loved this class and am so glad I was able to take it with Stigler. I learned so much and I love the way the class is taught through the textbook he created. The materials are all free which is a huge plus when traditionally textbooks can be so expensive. You are also given a free notebook to use to take notes which you get to use on all of the quizzes and exams, which I found endlessly helpful. This emphasizes Professor Stigler's wish for students to understand concepts instead of just memorizing them - you can write down definitions all you want and they will be useful, but you need to understand the concepts more than simple equations and rule memorization. I have taken multiple statistics classes before this one (Stats 10 and AP Stats) and while I found them useful because most of the concepts were familiar, you definitely don't need to have taken either because the concepts are presented in quite a different way and your previous learning can even become a bit of a hindrance (not too much, but it can be frustrating because Stigler is up in the conceptual land while a lot of statistics courses are down in the calculating/simplistic land).

There are 5 quizzes in the class, given every other week in section. They are all online and the lowest one is dropped. There is only one exam, also given online, and that is the final. When figuring your final grade, they will either weight the quizzes equally with the final or weigh the final more to ensure you get the highest grade. Professor Stigler says that this is because some people can learn better along the way, while some don't understand it until the very end, meaning all types of learners can do well and not one is punished over the other.

Participation is mandatory through PollEverywhere in class, so do show up! Homework is done through the online textbook and done by completion. If you do the homework fully, it will normally take 6-8 hours so do plan ahead.

I also would recommend utilizing the study halls held by the TAs each week - they are insanely helpful. Even if you think you understand the concepts - go! You can check your understanding, help teach other students, or just work on this week's chapter. I would recommend going to at least one study hall per week - they were offered every day in the quarter I took this class!

Stigler really cares for student learning and tries to engage his class which I really appreciated. He's huge in the field of psychology, which is why I appreciated how down to earth and invested he was, despite being so heavily immersed in academia as well. Great professor and would definitely recommend taking him over the other 100A professors.
