I loved Professor Sumner! She was very accommodating given the circumstances and I really learned some interesting and valuable information. If you watch the lectures and take notes, you are almost guaranteed a good grade. She has almost weekly assignments due as well, but they are not hard to complete and usually about an interesting topic. Take this class if you can!
Dr. Sumner was the absolute best. The material is interesting and will serve you in the ling run. She doesn't require you to read over a dense textbook but instead asks you to read timely articles that teach you relevant information. Her exams are doable and fair as long as you review the slides and read all the reading assignments. The two papers involve reading articles and answering some questions about the purpose, IVs, DVs and statistical analysis. As long as you write legitimate answers, you should be fine. For the peer review manuscript paper, you criticize an article and point out any limitations. Start the paper early and break down each part. She is reasonable and wants you to succeed. Participation matters so go to class and engage in the Campuswire discussions as earns you EC. The most amazing thing about this Dr. Sumner is how much compassion and support she offered as we were all facing the stress of COVID-19 pandemic. She allowed us to opt out of the final exam if we were happy with our current grade which relieved a great deal of stress. She made sure to give us daily updates and made herself available on Campuswire every single day. Take her if you want to learn useful information and feel respected and supported by your professor.
I really enjoyed this class! Dr. Sumner was a great lecturer, she was very clear and broke down topics. The readings for the class are super light, and she uses short popular press articles that are easily digestible. The tests were multiple choice and easy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was very compassionate and allowed students to make the final optional. She really cares about student learning and I considered what I learned valuable and applicable to my life.
Dr. Sumner is one of the best professors I've ever had at UCLA. Her genuine passion and excitement for health psychology was so evident from day 1. The material is SO interesting and engaging and has reshaped the way I view healthcare. Tests are totally doable if you study the slides and pay attention: she's really not out to get you and you can tell she just wants students to learn something valuable! And again, she herself is so approachable, intelligent and just has an overall positive energy. Can't recommend her enough!!
One of the most sweetest and understand professor I have had at UCLA! I enjoyed watching her lectures. She was extremely informative and precise with her lectures. I caught COVID during the beginning of the quarter and she was extremely accommodating.
Professor Sumner is THE sweetest and most understanding professor I have had. She provides asynchronous lectures twice a week which are so fun to watch and listen to. She does not have a monotone voice whatsoever and she's just so great and her class is very enjoyable! I recommend this class to everyone!!
Breakdown of the class:
Participation: 5 pts
Reflection assignments: 10 pts
Exams (TOP TWO OF THREE!): 50 pts
Journal club worksheets: 15 pts
Written manuscript peer review: 20 pts
Extra credit: 3 possible points
All of the assignments are so fun to do and her exams are very straightforward. There is no textbook for this course, but she does provide articles to read, which are short and interesting. If you pay attention during lecture, you're guaranteed an A. But this class isn't just about getting an A, you will learn sooo much from professor Sumner!!! TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!!!!
TAKE THIS CLASS! I cannot recommend it enough. I found the lectures to be engaging (they are asynchronous) and the material was very interesting. The exams are straightforward. As long as you watch the lectures, pay attention, and do the work, the path to an A is easy. Dr. Sumner is a great professor and very friendly. Take this class if you want an easy upper division Psychology course.
Professor Sumner's Health Psych class was one of the most interesting classes as I am also a healthcare worker, I learned a lot of new information that I didn't know before. Her class was manageable, DO NOT MISS the easy points you get from posting your weekly questions and responses via PACKBACK, those points will save you. I got a low C on my first exam, and one high B and an A on the final. She drops one exam which was so helpful. I found the exams to be a little tricky and challenging at times but after each exam I reflected upon how I can do better on the next. I did do the extra credit and got full points on my assignments and still got an A+ but I absolutely worked for it
I really really enjoyed this class!! Dr. Sumner is really nice and presents lectures in a clear manner. I personally think it's an easy A and the material is very interesting! You do need to have an iclicker since participation counts. Also, we were required to do 2 journal reviews (5 pts total) -- so it's helpful if you've taken 100B, especially for the final manuscript (worth 15 pts). Essentially you read a publication and answer questions about it -- like what was the IV, DV, etc. The lectures are straightforward, and I suggest focusing on the slides and the studies mentioned since they are on the test.
I would definitely take Dr. Sumner again!
