I would highly recommend German 56! Professor McCumber is very helpful and he actually captures numerous subtle points in the books. He will also tell you the page that you can refer to if you are going to write a paper. Mid-term paper is about a five pages comparison and final paper is a topic that you can choose on your own. He is tolerant also that you can argue as much as you want even if some parts are not 100% accurate

Winter 2019 - This is a pretty advanced philosophy class that you should only take if you are ready to dedicate some time into Hegel. The professor only gives oral presentations but you can record lecture or take notes on your PC. There are 2 papers. The midterm paper is roughly 3 pages and the final paper is 10-15 pages. The topic of the midterm paper is assigned but you need to come up with your own topic for the final paper. You can interpret the textbooks in your own sense without doing any academic research because the professor would say that they can be misleading. There are heavy readings especially at the beginning, when you read Hegel's Phenomenology. Other readings are from later philosophers who are influenced by Hegel, such as Marx, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. The professor grades you tolerantly as long as he sees you making the effort to write the paper ()

McCumber is a great professor. I had him for German Philosophy and his class really got me interested in reading further on the philosophers we studied. You learn a lot about significant philosophers of the pertaining century that you take the class (he teaches 19th and 20th century German Philosophy). If you are on the fence about taking him, I only have two words for you. Take him. He is a great guy, he is approachable and understanding, and his class isn't very hard so you can not feel stressed while learning the information. The final was a very long take home paper so there really is minimal stress involved in his class and very meaningful things learned. No reason not to take him. So take him.

Modern Receptions of Ancient Political Thought. There are 2 ways to view this class. On the one hand, there are no midterms/finals. It is 2 papers (one 5 page and one 10 page) and that's your entire grade. AND you get to pick the topic of the 10 pager, which is not too shabby...you definitely don't have to put in a lot of work if you don't want to, so in that way the class is good. Especially if you aren't that interested in philosophy. HOWEVER, THE HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTE LECTURES ARE PAINFUL. He is not an interesting lecturer AT ALL, the class drones on, and I have to say this class was incredibly boring. I feel like the right professor can make philosophy interesting and mind opening, but this class shut me down to it entirely. I ended up not going to a lot of the lectures in the end to save myself from waking up at 9am to walk to class only to fall asleep in class again. Even if you are fascinated by philosophy, I don't know how much you will enjoy having the subject destroyed by this professor. I'm so glad this class is over. (I got an A on the first paper but the second one has yet to be graded)

this is a really hard class. I got an A, but it was prob one of the most challenging classes i've taken. i don't know anything about philosophy. this was my first class in the field. not the best idea. since there are tons of references that i didn't understand. in the end the references were of little importance, but they really confused me during lecture. the philosophers that are discussed in class are arguably some of the most influential thinkers of the last 250 yrs. so taking the class has important implications for anyone interested in history, sociology, polisci. it was very hard. but i am glad i took the class. if you need help, talk to the professor at his office hrs. approaching him is intimidating and uncomfortable. he's pretty introverted and can make you feel like you're on your own, but just make sure you go in with some questions because he's not going to guide the conversation! he'll just sit there waiting for you to say something. YOU MUST KEEP UP ON THE READINGS OR YOU WILL HAVE NOT IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON AND YOU WILL NOT FIGURE IT OUT IF YOU WAIT TILL LAST MINUTE!!! start thinking about the essays (there are 2 total) early and go to McCumber w/ your ideas. if you're way off he'll steer you in the right direction. very nice guy in the end.
