Professor Pang made this course very accomodating for students everywhere. Asynchronous lectures, light workload, and 24 hour exams. The exams, as well as the homeworks and lab reports were light in terms of courseload. I would spend about 4 hours a week max working on homework and lab reports. His slides are concise and informative, and we breeze through a lot of content in such a short time. His lectures are done on PowerPoint though, so no 2x speed. He is available for many office hours, and labs were not very time consuming (we could leave early). He is also very responsive to emails, so don't be afraid to reach out if you need help.

Overall, Professor Pang has been one of my favorite instructors so far, and he has made this class very fun! I would take this class again with him in a heartbeat.

This class is amazing! Take this with 20B(H) as it really does go in parallel with many of the topics learned in class. AP Chemistry helps a lot with the topics, but it is by NO means needed at all. Pang's asynchronous lectures are extremely helpful, and are in PowerPoint format rather than a video. It's super intuitive to watch the slides and listen along, rather than trying to rewind a video.

The lab section with the TA is super chill as well. It never lasts longer than like 30 minutes, and after that, its an optional worksheet to complete. You can just use it as supplemental office hours or review, and you never have to stay past the initial TA lecture, which is graded for participation (usually a single clicker question via Zoom poll).

Homework is light compared to a normal class, but the class is only 3 units. There's typically one lab assignment and one homework assignment each week, and they are all very manageable. Some of the later labs get a bit longer, but they are never difficult, and the majority of the time is formatting tables in Excel. Speaking of Excel, some technological knowledge is helpful, but the tutorials provided on how to use Excel mean that even with no prior knowledge of spreadsheet programs, you will be absolutely fine. Just check your work with some people from the class, and you really can't go wrong in this class. There's also one random writing assignment during the quarter that you can think of as a homework assignment with less calculation and more writing. It's easy and you can get some free extra credit if you do well on it.

As for midterms and finals, they're called "quizzes," but its a just a really long comprehensive homework assignment. Again, nothing tricky at all, just a bit lengthy, but you get 24 hours for a 3 hour assignment. It's very doable in even just 3 hours (Math department has something to learn from this class), and you're allowed to review lecture slides and homework during the tests. There are no unfair questions and everything is made very easy and accommodating.

Since the majority of the class is asynchronous or via TA discussions, you don't actually see Pang all that often. Do yourself a favor and go to office hours, this man is so caring and accommodating. His lectures are super straightforward and to the point for people who just want to get through the material fast, but he will take the time to elaborate and help out if you ask him to. It's really the best of both worlds.

You're probably going to need to take this class anyway if you're looking at CHEM 20L reviews. Just do it with Pang and look forward to it. As long as you don't put all the work to the last day, this will be a very stress-free class.

Dr. Pang is amazing!
I was a bit worried at first when I heard that Pang was doing asynchronous lectures, but 20L quickly became one of my favorite and most refreshing classes for the reasons provided:

1. All of the slideshows, procedures, instructions, and extra resources on CCLE were all SUPER CLEAR, precise, and easy to follow.
2. The midterm and final quizzes were both very fair, as the problems very much resembled the example problems on the slideshows and what was done in labs.
3. Dr. Pang is extremely responsive and helpful in office hours, and always goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material.
4. He is also very quick to respond to emails, and sends out frequent email updates about assignments.
5. Dr. Pang welcomes beginners! It is not intimidating to ask him even simple-sounding questions. He truly wants his students to succeed.

This man is a chiller. If you can, take the class with Pang. All the information is clearly presented and the instructions for the labs were very sufficient. He is accomodating for conflicts and is always willing to help.

But overall, I think who your TA is definitely affects you so make sure you get a good TA. My TA was Bocheng and he was super great with grading. He wasn't nitpicky with points on the HW and Labs, and made exceptions to the late policy. Although he wasn't great at responding to emails and his lab lectures were kinda dry, I'd take it with him again.

The class is laid out with 5 main components: lab section, hw, lab reports, one essay, and exams.

The LAB SECTION is just a ~40 minute lecture by your TA on the weeks material and you go into a breakout room with a student and do a couple practice problems for ~10 minutes. You don't have to get the right answers and you can leave whenever. It might be daunting to have 2 and a half hour of lab on MyUCLA, but dw it never takes more than an hour.

The HW is usually pretty easy, takes half an hour to an hour, and is due every Tuesday. You "watch" a lecture (voice-over in a powerpoint) and then answer some questions.

The LABS are probably the most difficult/time consuming by far. It's pretty self-explanatory, but he gives you very detailed instructions on what to do. The GroupMe will be your best friend to check your work because they do grade by accuracy. Sometimes the labs will take 30 minutes, sometimes they'll take 4 hours, but usually theyre in the ballpark of 1-2 hours.

The ESSAY is pretty easy I guess. Our prompt was on an oximeter (covid), but the prompts will prob be different in the future. He gave up to 5 points of EC (on a 20 point assignment) which is pretty nice.

The midterm and final "quizzes" are much more extensive than quizzes but oh well. We had 24 hours on them, so while it was lengthy, I was able to complete it to the best of my ability. The questions were fully covered in the material so it wasn't that hard at all.

Amazing class! Definitely recommend taking this concurrently with 20B as it definitely helps bring the concepts to life.

The class is a lot of work- you have weekly prelabs, postlabs, a small "essay" later in the quarter that provides extra credit as well as midterm and a final. However, the work isn't necessarily difficult as long as you follow all of the instructions and maybe even check with your friends. Stay on top of things and you'll be fine!

The overall class is pretty easy in terms of what we learn in class. However, the lab reports really depend on your lab partner. A bad partner can kill your GPA even if the grading scheme is very friendly.

king energy. I mean tbh I barely interacted with him this since he just posted slides with audio, but I know he's a chiller. I mean the labs weren't the most fun thing in the world, but they were solidly easy enough. Just don't procrastinate THAT BAD and you'll be fine.

I think my one word of advice is to try to get an easy TA. You can't know for sure how difficult one is until it's too late, but sometimes it's easy enough to get a sense if they'll be a harsh grader.

Pang is an absolute legend. I have never encountered a professor or teacher that gives such clear instructions and expectations, and it's so refreshing. It never once felt like he was asking me a question that he didn't prepare me for which was very nice. At least online, lectures were in the form of a PowerPoint with voice recordings on each slide, and they were good and were very relevant to the homework and lab reports. Online labs are kinda boring, but they were never too annoying because of Pang's great instructions. The workload for this class felt a little high for a 3 unit class, with a week's work being an hour of lecture, about an hour on homework, around 3-4 hours on a lab report, and 1 hour on live zoom with a TA, but it wasn't anything crazy. The midterm and final were basically like long homework assignments. Would definitely recommend. If you can read and follow directions, you will get an A.

Honestly I learned more through his lectures than in my actual chem 20B class. If you plan ahead, this class will be easy. A regular week consists of 2 assignments. Some assignments are LONG, like 5-6 hours long. His assignments are easy just time consuming. The tests are fair and open book, I personally got a B and A on the two tests. Great prof and great class. Highly recommend.
