I really loved his slides and how he broke down each concept into really digestible pieces. Sometimes the readings that were assigned were dense and hard to understand, but after his lectures were super clear and helped a lot. Took this class during Spring 2020 online amidst social turmoil and Professor Sigmon was really understanding about everything. Definitely would recommend him and TA Justin Breck!

I really loved sigmon’s class. A king. I’ve taken theory courses before & absolutely remembered NOTHING but in sigmon’s class I have retained almost 90% of the information. I, for some reason, never understood concepts by theorists like Marx & Nietzsche, but he made me be able to understand everything. It was an interesting class... sometimes boring tho haha

Some people were complaining about his exam this year (it was all multiple choice) & how it didn’t test on conceptual facts but rather specific facts directly from his lecture... but personally I think this is easier. I took detailed notes in class & copied his lecture down word for word then read my notes after every class.

I mean I don’t like short answer exams so maybe I’m biased towards his exams.

Professor Sigmon also does an excellent job at summarizing & going into detail about the specific readings we had to do. A lot of the readings are dense so even after reading, I tended to not understand everything that was talked about but after watching the lectures, everything made sense.

We also had an essay which really just depends on who you have for your section TA.

Basically, if you want to pass this class, watch & take notes on all the lectures (don’t procrastinate) & then read the lecture notes so you can retain the info. Skim the readings before lecture though so that lecture makes more sense rather than you trying to learn all this new info by yourself.

Sigmon wants us to succeed!! Good luck

This class was super interesting. The readings were a little boring at first but they get far more interesting as the quarter goes on. We have to do a weekly journal based on the readings but they are fairly short. You must buy the books though!! Professor Sigmon is super nice and pretty engaging but he can be a little boring since he does not use a mic and his class was late in the day. He gave us study guides for the midterm and final which were extremely helpful. There is also a term paper due at the end of the quarter but you choose your own topic so it is fairly interesting. Overall, I would recommend this class with Professor Sigmon. I am also selling hard copies of the following books for this class: The Meaning of Sociology (9th edition), Mapping the Social Landscape (7th edition), and Readings for Sociology (9th edition). Text me at (909)725-7338 for prices!!

I absolutely love this class. It is informative and interesting, and EASY. The course materials perfectly fit my expectation for a sociology intro class. Professor Sigmon is engaging and funny. He explains the reading very well in class, and use many examples to help us understand. The workload is relatively low, about five readings a week 8 pages long in average. Several readings are harder than most others(which are super easy and fun to read), but again, Sigmon did a great job summarizing and explaining them, so don't worry at all.
There was one midterm, one five-page-long paper and the final. Tests contain word banks, MC, T or F, and short answers. They are very easy in my opinion, basically you just need to memorize everything on his slides(available on CCLE). Also he provided study guides, which are very helpful. And for the paper, you can basically write about any topic you want, just write about it sociologically, and you will definitely end up with an A, and love sociology.

Sigmon’s exams are mostly from his slides. He goes at a slow pace for those who prefer it, and class is optional. His TA’s are very helpful in clarifying concepts and the assignments are easy. Really easy A if you put in the slightest amount of effort

I absolutely loved taking this class with Professor Sigmon! He was genuinely super funny, likable, and an overall great professor. I always take notes by hand and he goes at a very good pace for that. Even if you don't get everything down, he does upload slides to CCLE. The slides highlight the main points of what he discusses and are thorough enough that you can read & understand them on their own.
The exams in this class were extremely reasonable. For both, I went through the uploaded slides and completed the study guide he provides and just studied that and I got a high A on both. The tests consist of a few parts: a fill-in-the-blank of quotes (most of these are common sense & moreso test your understanding of concepts rather than memorization of specific quotes), true or false (with explanation if false), MC, and short answers (more in depth versions of the MC, test understanding of different theories/elements of a theory.) If you study even a little bit and pay attention in class/read the slides you'll be golden.
The readings could get kind of dense, particularly the older ones, but if you get stuck, a lot of the readings are rephrased/summarized online. You just need to understand the main points of the readings so you can have context for discussion and concepts talked about in lecture. (The readings are usually used as a 'jumping off' point for concepts in lecture).
Lectures were always engaging. He'll often take questions from the room & he's chill enough that people felt comfortable speaking in my class so we would often spend a decent chunk of class asking Q's/giving input. I will say he didn't use a mic when I had him and isn't super super loud so if you're in a big room it's probably best to sit a little bit closer. We sometimes watched videos in class to expand on concepts (mostly bits of documentaries). I felt the use of the docus was really interesting & well integrated. You only really need the main points of the clips from the slides so you could watch the clips without being worried about notetaking.
The essay prompt is broad enough that you can write about something that truly interests you so that's a plus. Talking with your TA can help ensure you're headed in the right direction.
Like I said, I loved this class! Because of this class, I even switched my major to sociology. I highly, highly recommend!

I highly recommend Sociology 1 with Professor Sigmon. I especially recommend it as a GE for incoming freshmen because I think it is very manageable and a good class to get used to college. His lectures are very clear and organized. He uploads the slides online, but I recommend going to class because Sigmon is just a great professor and answers questions during lecture.
The final is not cumulative and the midterm and final are structured the same. Just finish the study guides he provides, memorize them, and then go over the lecture slides and your notes.
The readings can be challenging and long, but if you read them and get the main ideas, then that's fine. You don't need to know all the information in the readings because Sigmon lectures on what you need to know from them. You do have to provide weekly responses to the readings, which was not difficult at all.
For the essay, Sigmon provides you with several prompts. Just choose one that is interesting to you and write it early. Sometimes TAs will schedule individual appointments where they go over your essay which is very helpful.
Most importantly, the information you will learn is very interesting and often makes you think about the world a little differently.

this class was very easy, it was also an interesting class as well. The professor is a little boring but I did enjoy how he incorporated a lot of videos in the class. The exams are very easy, but you should still study for them. The class was well organized and the grade distribution was very fair. Overall the class was good and I would definitely recommend it with him as a GE.

Professor Sigmon is AMAZING!!!
Hes a very organized, prepared and often times funny lecturer. he really cares about the success of his students and their understanding of the material. He doesn't try to trick you or mislead you. He's very passionate about his theorists and passionate about teaching!
We learned about 5 different theorists that all ESSENTIAL in sociology and really interesting. There was a decent amount of reading, but to be honest I only did about half of the required reading and used spark notes or online outlets to summarize the rest. He basically reads to you in class, which some thought was pointless, but it helped when you didn't read the previous night. you honestly probably don't even have to read because he makes the material extremely clear and takes away the key concepts you need to know. Attending Section is probably the most important component of this class because my TA, at least, was such a QUEEN and made the, often dense, readings very simple and highlighted he key concepts that arent always so obvious!
The homework was just submitting a response to the reading every Tuesday and Thursday which are just graded for completion and a decent attempt to answer the questions. Don't worry if you do not completely understand the readings or questions because it will all be cleared up in the following lecture and discussion section.
We had 1 midterm, a paper and a final that is basically like a second midterm because it is not accumulative.
The midterm and final were both very straightforward, I recommend studying with a group so that you guys can talk through the concepts and square away and discrepancies.
For reference: I got a 96% on the midterm, A- on the paper, 100% on the final and ended with an A overall.
I definitely recommend taking professor Sigmon if you can !!!!

Professor Sigmon is a gem. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes his lectures engaging and funny. GO TO LECTURE AND SECTION! Those were where the readings were broken down; it helped everyone understand the material more clearly. I recommend going to office hours because my TA was a queen as well! There is a midterm exam, term paper and final exam. There are also reading responses that you have to complete twice a week (I personally did most of the readings). This was a very doable class and was definitely one of my favorites.
