Bristow himself is cool. He's an entertaining and insightful lecturer, and spent most of class close-reading the texts he assigned for homework. Unfortunately, his assignments were ridiculous. Every essay prompt was like a joke, and the final exam had so many restrictions that it made my head spin. It's not that the essays or the test were difficult in and of themselves--but Bristow's extremely restrictive instructions were bordering on bizarrely compulsive. I would only take him again if there were fewer assignments, because I don't think I could handle such condescending prompts and restrictions again.

I took Honors Collegium 117, not English 117 I love Bristow! I was in a seminar with him, and it was amazing. He is passionate, a great discussion leader, and is fun to talk to. He is always available in office hours, and can really help clarify your ideas for essays. Would recommend, definitely!!!

Bristow is soooooo great. He definitely knows what he is talking about and puts a spin on it. Lectures are funny and you actually want to participate. He is a fair grader, and my writing definitely improved. I miss his class now. He was so amazing and very funny. Take him if you can, you will not regret it. Bristow rocks!!!

I'm going to be very honest. First, Bristow is a great lecturer. He is interesting, funny, bright...etc. He has great material as well. Now the bad news. He is just not a good person in general. I asked him for advice on how I should write my papers, considering he gave me a terrible grade, and he just said I obviously do not belong at UCLA. He talks down to you, and does not help you in any way to be a better writer. It's funny because I've never received a C on a paper in my career until I met Bristow. Equally as funny, my GPA is higher than everyone in that class. So in conclusion, I hope you know how exactly he wants his papers because you will do great in the tests and lectures, but he kills you on those papers with extremely biased and unbalanced grading.
