As a lecturer, Prof Gardner is very good at explaining the concepts, and as long as you go to all of her lectures, you'll get a pretty firm grasp on the material. However, my main problem was that she would spend a good amount of time each lecture going over things that has nothing to do the class, most of them financial advice, and some about her fraud class she definitely recommends us taking (which sounds really interesting and I think I actually will take it, but I wish she wouldn't spend so much class time talking about it).
Her assignments, too, really didn't have much correlation with what we're taught in class (except for assignment 2). For 2 of the 5 assignments, we had to calculate the financial ratios for a company of our choice, but we were never taught anything about the financial ratios. These financial ratios were also on the final, which wasn't bad since all we had to do was to memorize the formulas, but I really wish she could've went more in-depth into the meaning behind the financial ratios, or just not assign those assignments at all because the rest of the class had nothing to do with financial ratios or financial analysis.
Other than that, I actually really liked this class - all of the accounting was really interesting to me since I had no prior background in accounting, and all the exams were very, very fair. She tells us right before the exams what was going to be covered in the exam, and as long as you review those concepts, you'll do great. One thing I do have stress though is you MUST do the practice problems in the textbook - she doesn't use the textbook or assign the textbook problems for grading, but you really, really HAVE to do those practice questions on your own because her exams are pretty time-crunched, and if you didn't practice enough, it's really easy to make mistakes. The class is curved with 20% on the assignments, 35% on the midterm, and 45% on the final.
The professor wanted students to learn but this class was so much work it was awful. Wait a quarter to take 1a with another professor because I literally didnt have a weekend off where I wasnt working on one of her 4 projects or studying for a Midterm or final. Shes also crazy and screams during class which is actually good because you remember what she says but like that atmosphere isnt for everyone. Overall I would wait until another professor teaches this class who can give you a more simple and easy approach to intro accounting.
This is NOT a hard class! Professor Gardner is a great lecturer and she gives useful suggestions on various topics such as retirement plans etc. In my opinion, the homework problems are only useful for the midterm since the final is based mostly on the course reader. Memorizing the content in the course reader and understanding it thoroughly would be sufficient to get a good grade. I didn't do any of the homework problems but still got decent scores. In conclusion, this class is fun and engaging, and I would definitely recommend taking this class with her.
DO ALL THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS. Honestly, Gardner is a very good lecturer. She's funny, gives good financial advice, and seems like she genuinely wants her students to succeed in their personal finances. The world of finances really opened up to me upon taking this class, so I personally really enjoyed it; however, the pressure assigned to the exams made this class a nightmare for me. I panicked on the midterm and ended up getting a 56%, with the midterm accounting for around 35% of your final grade. I studied really hard for the final and still ended up getting a 63%, but I came out with a C in the class. Here's what you need to know: Accounting itself is NOT HARD. This subject is one that literally anyone can do if you put the time and effort in; however, in saying that, if you really want a good grade in this class, DO ALL THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS. They are not collected, but all the practice really helped my conceptual understanding of the material, even more than attending Gardner's class at times. Also, from what I understand, Gardner has her exams graded a certain way where you are actually deducted points when you make a mistake, so you end up getting a lower score than what you probably deserve. All in all, if you decide to take this class, you better know your stuff, because you won't get away with just having a basic understanding of accounting concepts. I really think that if I would have been able to dedicate more time to this class and would have hammered away at more problems in the very beginning, I would have (hopefully) come out with better grades on each of the exams.
Well, let me put this review in context by saying that I am a lot worse at Accounting than I thought I would be.
Prof. Gardner is awesome. She gave great lectures and legit told you EVERYTHING that would be on the midterm and final. She gave ample time to complete homework and group projects.
I studied for both the midterm and final for DAYS. I did every practice problem I could. I spent hours in the YRL stacks.
I'm just bad at accounting, turns out. Got a 60% on the final exam, for a great grand total of a C in the class. I don't blame Prof. Gardner as plenty of her students did well. Time to ditch the business prefix on my major, lol.
You can never study enough. This class is incredibly hard and the professor is legit mean. In the syllabus it literally says “You will not get the grade you desire or think you deserve.” I was in the hospital and she didn’t give me an extension on a 20+ page assignment. Literally just don’t take this class. Change your major. Wait for a different professor. Drop out of college. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I am a junior right now and this teacher is by far the WORST teacher I have ever met at UCLA . NEVER TAKE HER CLASS if you do not want to ruin your GPA, your happiness, and you life. She is the worst person I have met since my childhood. I feel shamed to have such a person living and working in the same neighborhood with me.
Professor Gardener is often late for both class and office hours. However, she is an excellent lecturer. I would say that this class is certainly manageable if you are willing to put in the time and effort of going to class and promptly completing the homework assignments.
