She teaches 110 but it wasn't available in the drop down. (Gender & Communication) The class is interesting as is the reading. Her powerpoint are clear and she will give out a comprehensive study guide. The tests are surprisingly difficult... Many scored lower on the midterm than they expected. Digging deeper into the concepts and definitions is necessary to get an A. Also knowing application of what is taught, is required on the exams. Nice teacher.

Fall 2020 - Please keep in mind I took this course during the covid-19 pandemic and everything was online. Dr. Kicenski is such a sweet and understanding professor! Concepts are honestly really confusing and quite philosophical, but Professor does her best to explain them. The course reader was useful and needed for exams, but exam questions were mostly drawn from her lectures. Exams are worded a bit confusing and are tricky, but if you watch all the lectures and do the reading you will be fine. Lectures were all recorded and posted along with the powerpoint slides on CCLE. There were 2 individual papers that were only two pages, 3 exams, and one final paper with a partner along with a "presentation" (informal sharing in a break-out room) and two 2-paged peer reviews on another pair's paper. As always, choose your partner wisely. I highly recommend this course and I would be down to take it again. Dr. Kicenski rocks!

Spring 2021 - PROS: - Interesting and relatable content, not difficult to grasp at all - Dr. K is very nice and pleasant to talk to! - Essays were short and easy to write, not graded harshly - Tests were all multiple choice and OK, but they do require you to pay close attention to details from the readings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONS: - You have to write a 10-ish page portfolio paper at the end of the class. - You also have to buy a $45 course reader

Spring 2020 - I feel somewhat catfished by this class. I was drawn in by the fact that it supposedly would be an analysis of rhetoric as used in modern-day popular culture. What became extremely evident within a few weeks, though, was that it was just a soapbox for the professor to extol her own pedantry to a captive audience. Let me make myself clear: There was no popular culture involved in this class. This is a class on obscure rhetorical theories posited by individuals the professor will make seem important, but really aren't. You will spend your time wondering when she will get to the point. Spoiler: There is no point. The tests are impossible, as she chooses to use a multiple-choice format for extremely subjective and nuanced material that is much better suited for short answer and essay questions. The essay prompts will require that you reread them multiple times just to be able to decipher the crazy language with which they are written. This class had me questioning my own ability to comprehend English and grasp concepts. Let it be known that this is the class that dragged down my GPA, as well. Please don't take this class that is sheer nonsense masquerading as academia.
