Hill was the better of the 2 profs for MIMG 101. He is way more organized with his lectures. His exam questions are very based on his lectures. Sometimes the exam included an exact copy of a slide from lecture and you had to fill out the blanks. MIMG 101 is not merely memorization. you need to understand the experiments discussed in class so that you can apply it to different scenarios. The exams are very experimental/research based. Understand the experiments, why a certain experiment is used to test a particular hypothesis, know the controls, and intricate parts of experimental designs. For Hill also know facts included in the lecture. I didn't use the book and got a B. discussions helped me a lot. I only went twice to Hlll's office hour and no more because other students' questions wasted my time. I used the forum for additional questions. Also, for the 1st midterm which included pathways for carbon assimilation, he told us to memorize the pathways but no pathway was covered on any of the exams. Im not saying skip them, but just letting you know that memorizing those pathways was a waste of time. I guess better focus on understanding the experiments and when to use them. for pathways know the names, whether they're reductions/oxidation runs, enzymes used… I'd recommend Hill. He's concerned about students and throws in couple easy questions, and is very organized, tests lecture based. HIs lectures tend to be fast paced but sometimes end early. I'd recommend using the audio for his lectures but those may be cutoff.

I seriously don't get why UCLA would always have two professors for MIMG101. This just makes the class super unorganized. I went to his office hours on the set time, but since he is a PI, he spent more than an hour talking to his graduate student. He saw me outside waiting for him since i knocked, but he didn't seem to want to end his discussion. This didn't make any sense to me because I went to his office hour during his designated office hours. Shitty professor! He made students memorized super small details in his slides and if you're a conceptual person, you would find it hard since his test always asks you list 2 reasons here and 3 reasons there, but instead, during lecture he only told you ONE REASON! Not a great professor who you would expect!

Dr. Hill is a great professor! He understands we have a lot to do so he will often end class early and goes at a very good pace. He is very open to answering questions and will go out of his way to help you understand a concept both in class and in OHs. His questions are a lot more straight forward than Dr. Lazazzera's, but don't take them lightly since he might ask you the most random things. Get to know him by going to OH, he will help you out at the end of the course and with any concept you do not understand. I highly recommend him for any course!

Professor Hill was a great! His lectures are interesting to listen to. I found his exam questions much easier then Lazazzera's questions. He requires more reading then Lazazzera but i thought he was a very fair teacher. MIMG 101 is not an easy class but like any class if you put the effort into it then you will be fine. The great thing about the exams is that they give you plenty of time to finish.

I personally liked Dr. Lazazzera better for the MIMG101 course. Dr. Hill was a little bit less organized and didn't use the slides as much as I like. However, he is fair and it is a great class. Do the homeworks, they are great prep for the exams.

professor hill taught this with lazazzera...
Hill is definitely a lot better at communicating than lazazzera by far...
but his test questions are harder than lazazzera's, i felt...
for this class, just memorize every freaking experiment taught in lecture...
and the test questions will be asking you to design an experiment like you did in lecture... basically, its the experiment with a different organism or different quality...
know the experiments in your sleep.
and be as thorough as you can on the exam. if you miss a certain detail, you'll get your points madly marked off like another other LS class...
the professors are hard but not impossible... just follow my advice and you should be fine.

Professor Hill was the better one of the professors, but the class is still not worth-taking. If you are not an MIMG major and you don't absolutely need this class then do NOT take it because it will hurt your GPA. No matter how good you do in the class you could still end up with a C in the class. This class is just not worth it. It seems interesting and not that bad but it will hurt your GPA!

HILL was probably the best professor of the three I had for MIMG 101. I thought his test questions were tough and overall the class is not easy. Still, he was very concerned with students and made himself available often. Good communication between him and his students.
