Fall 2019 - This class is more difficult than other elementary language classes. It is harder than the past since the professor changed the format of the midterms in this quarter. DO NOT take this class if you don't want to ruin your GPA!! AND it is really based on which TA you take with. If you really want to learn French, do not take the class with the TA Re***ca!! She's probably good at speaking French but not good at teaching it. She spoke French SUPER fast just like showing off her French, and she was often so confused.

Winter 2019 - This is the worst class I have taken here at UCLA. Unlike other individuals leaving reviews for TA's I took the class with Jansma . She is the worst professor I have ever had during my time at UCLA. She is disorganized, unhelpful, and prejudiced towards the LGBTQ+ community and Black folks. Every single time a student of color mispronounced a word in class she was condescending. However, when white students made mistakes she praised their effort. Strangely she is the chair of the French department. I tried making a report about her behavior, but no one ever reached out. Also, the most difficult aspect of this class is she is extremely disorganized. She hands out a syllabus at the beginning of the quarter and does not go off of it, she was sometimes two weeks behind and expected us to be ready for quizzes. Avoid this class at all costs. If you can, take it at a community college. If anyone else has been discriminated against please report it. DO NOT take this class if you don't want to ruin your GPA!!

I didn't have Professor Jansma, but I just wanted to talk about the TA's I had for French 1 through 3. I loved every single one of them! Samuel Yniesta: He is French and definitely a great teacher. He was really easy to talk to! He graded pretty easily and fairly. Hannah Vaughn: I think she was the head of the TA's at the time, and she was amazing. Her class was one of my favorites. I'm usually really shy with speaking in class, but she was anything but intimidating. She was always helpful and never made you feel bad about making a mistake. She was incredibly sweet and highly recommend her as a TA. Catherine Mullen: She goes by Katie, and she was absolutely amazing. I was really intimidated by her at first, but throughout the course of the class, she was so easy going. She never put anyone on the spot. She kept order in the classroom but still created a fun environment to learn it. She also baked for us several times and acted like a friend. It was really a pleasure to get to know her. I was gone for a week and she took the time to sit with me and catch me up on everything I had missed. The day of the final, she had office hours for a few hours despite having her own work to do/being tired, and answered every question we had. She was the first TA I went to office hours for, and it gave me the courage to go to other classes' office hours as well.

Summer 2018 - I took French 8 with Gina and Ellias as my professors and they were amazing! Gina learned French so she understands the exact struggles we have while learning French. Ellias is a native speaker so he helps on pronunciation. They're understanding on your pace and as long as you put effort into the course and show you really want to understand the material, then learning French will actually be fun.
