Winter 2021 - This class was easy for me up until the final. Grade is comprised of a midterm, a final, and weekly quizzes and small assignments. I opted not to blow $120 on the Mindtap thing and did well on the midterm, but the final really killed my grade. Was far harder than the practice exam he gave us which I only missed a couple questions on. Besides that, quizzes and section prep assignments were fairly straightforward, although I never attended my TA section live. Ohanian seems nice enough, but his recorded lectures were just slides he got from the textbook company that he read off of, and didn't add anything to my understanding of the material, so essentially only used the textbook to study. An incredibly mediocre experience all around.

Fall 2020 - Honestly such a great fiat lux. Mr. Ohanian is super nice and very open to questions and is clearly a really intelligent guy, I will definitely be trying to take other classes he will teach in the future. Make sure to take advantage of the guest lectures as you get to speak to some very influential people.

This was by far one of the best Economics experiences I have had at UCLA; Professor Ohanian adds energy to all his lectures - with jokes and presentations of his lessons that are simple to follow; if you scan a chapter and then come to class, you will totally understand generally what is going on. His lectures draw ideas from the reading, however he has his own spin on lessons - such as adding derivations - which make the material more realistic and interesting. He constantly announces opportunities to come and ask him questions, and best of all he makes his midterm OPTIONAL! He understands that things happen, and thus he allows your final to count for your full grade; this is fair, because you will get an A on the final if you put time into studying efficiently. Professor Ohanian is one of the best, and has a very very good teaching style; TRUST ME, TAKE HIS CLASS! I don't understand why anyone who is an average econ student like me would not!

Fall 2016 - I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! he is wonderful. he is so knowledgable and he makes econ so much easier to understand. He uses articles to relate to what he's teaching which really helped me learn the concepts. I will say that it is a lot more math than you would expect for a course titled history of capitalism, but he does the math in class to help you understand the point of what he's teaching, and the best part is that he doesn't make you do nonsense algebra, you just take derivatives to understand what you're learning. He is one of the only econ professors at UCLA that understands how much students struggle in this major and he really focuses on concepts and not just daunting, annoying math or algebra. One midterm 25%, homework assignments in lab is 25% and the lab isn't time consuming at all, one final that's 50%, and if you do better on the final he'll usually put more weight on that.
