Quarter: Winter 2021
Grade: A

I took this class during a completely online COVID quarter, and it was great. Prof Johns filmed all lectures (and TA sections) ahead of time, and the class is completely asynchronous. All quizzes and tests open on day one and there are no due dates until the last day of finals week. You can work at your own pace, so I just did all the readings and lectures and tests super quickly so I could be done with the class. Prof and the TA who recorded the sections are both super organized and clear, there's no excuse to get below an A in this class because everything is open note and at your own pace. I highly recommend this class!

Quarter: Winter 2021
Grade: B+

I actually enjoyed the format of doing the lectures on your own pace, because it let me focus on other classes more during midterms. However, it was easy to get behind and I also felt that there was no leeway on the grading with the unit assessments. The GroupMe for the class was immediately shut down and because there were no live sessions, finding help was more tricky. The content was definitely interesting, but I don't think I would take a class like this again.

I am taking Prof Johns' Intl Organizations class this quarter and I love it. I may be biased because IOs are my specific area of interest, but Professor Johns is a great professor, especially for being brand new!!
She's incredibly organized, clear and thorough. The class has a discussion where weekly quizzes on the reading are given. The two lowest quiz grades are dropped. These make up a small portion of the grade and so does participation. The rest is comprised of a mid-term and final, which are actual tests of short-answer questions, not essays. I think the final may have an essay component, but the mid-term did not. The testing is also straightforward. Basically, I feel like the grading components and the questions on them are really crafted to ensure that you're learning, comprehending and actually retaining the material. I feel like this rarely happens at UCLA, it's so easy to just get the grade and then immediately forget everything you've learned. That's not the case in this course with Johns, she gets it. She seems to really understand how to select readings, structure the class and the flow of the subject matter, as well as grade students in a manner that effectively teaches.
I really appreciate how well-organized and well-thought out the course is and I highly recommend Professor Johns. She's incredibly fair and approachable.

Quarter: Winter 2020
Grade: A

Professor Johns makes international law (a topic that could otherwise be sort of boring/irrelevant) pretty interesting- her lectures are engaging and extremely well organized. There are weekly quizzes in section that are super easy, just set aside 20 minutes or so to read the cases and you'll be fine as the questions are simple fact based questions. Her midterm was a bit harder than I expected actually, but she does curve it generously and I really should have just studied more. The tests are worth most of your grade (70%) however given COVID-19 our final was changed into a set of essay questions that were take-home. The take-home final took a significant amount of time and although I respected her as being fair during the rest of the time I took the class I think she could have been a little more understanding.
