I took jewish studies 75 with Hakak. He is very knowledgeable and knows what he is lecturing about. He really dissects the text we read and analyze things that never even crossed my mind. The text we read were very interesting as well, especially Agnon's short stories. They really made me think about life and all that good stuff. His two-hour lecture can be difficult to bear at times, but at least the second half of it is dedicated to jewish films, many of those i enjoyed. His midterm is easy, but you have to read every text he assigns. Even better, he allows you to make up your exam for an even better grade. His final comprises of 15 questions, and you choose and answer 12. I got an A in the class. Take his class, you really learn a lot about Judaism, their history, and their culture.

Professor Hakak is awesome! His lectures may be a bit on the boring side, but his overall grading style is great. The assigned reading is great, and the movies are pretty decent. We had to write 3 short papers, had a midterm, and a final, but overall the class was very easy. Professor Hakak is more interested in teaching than grading. He doesn't mind giving out A's, and tells us that the important part is learning. Jewish 75 is one of the only classes I actually enjoyed, so if you need a GE course, you should definitely take Jewish 75.

Yes Prof Hakak is a caring and charming man, and he means well, but Jewish 175 is simply the pits. Shai Agnon's short stories are genius and classic Hebrew/Israeli literature, but other than that we read works of canonic Israeli authors, but not their magnum opus, which I was a lil' bummed about. The lectures drag on, even amongst the low-budget Israeli movies, and only towards the end of the quarter did Hakak involve the class in discussions. The room was too big for the 35 participants and therefore I feel too distant from everyone and Hakak. The only thing that got me through the class was my general knowledge of Zionism, Israeli history, and relationships between Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. Otherwise I haven't the slightest idea how any non-Jews survived. On the other hand, if you're interested in easy classes over worthwhile ones, I recommend this!

JS 175 is an easy class, selling the textbook, Modern Hebrew Literature and two course readers needed for the class (Jew 175). I got an A, and these books are absolutely necessary. I tried looking for stories online, but many were unavailable. All the exams and papers are based on the reading. Please contact me at 714-331-4626 if interested.
