I think a few of these reviews are overly harsh. I did not find Professor Faier condescending, and thought she did her best to make relevant everyone's life experiences and opinions. She cares a lot about her students--and also expects a lot out of them. In UCLA classrooms professors SHOULD have high expectations of their students. She's a tough but consistent (and fair) grader; she takes improvement into account when submitting final grades. Meeting her in office hours is welcome, pleasant and helpful. She even put together outside study groups for students seeking help with Geog M146. She held these groups on her own time. Her exams are no-nonsense, straightforward, take home essay format.
I really enjoyed my classes with Faier. I think she's figuring herself out as a professor--that she's actively trying to improve in it. She's scatterbrained and organized at the same time, which is fun to be around. I think her themes are interesting and applicable, that her readings are interesting and related, and that her lectures fly by. I'd recommend her to anyone interested in gender studies/anthro/cultural geography. I would not recommend her for an easy, no-work A.
Professor Faier, is more than willing to work with her students, her exams involve a lot of writing and thought but she is concerned about student learning and only creates her exams this way to force you to think. Her lectures are very well laid out and easy to follow. Sometimes she goes super fast but if you ask her to go back over the last slide before moving on she will!
