I personally had Professor Boatright who used the exact same materials as Professor Faier. This was honestly the best GE class i have ever taken from the interesting readings to an awesome TA(Mr. Walker is the man). I may be bias because I had such a great TA but the workload is very minimal. 8 pages of writing split up into 4 2page paper assignments due every other week. Definitely recommend taking this class.
Although Prof Faier is not the nicest professor, she is still very fair and a good teacher overall. In terms of workload there is a lot of reading from the course reader but there are only 4 reading reflections (1-2 pages double spaced) with an in class written midterm and in class written final. I genuinely feel like I learned a lot from this class even if Prof Faier wasn't the friendliest or the funniest. I personally read most of the course reader but if you study her slides for the midterm and final you should be able to get a solid grade just maybe not an A+. The slides cover most of the info but there are still some details that might come up on the tests that are in the course reader. Only problem I would say for this class is one of the course readers was $100 and the other $18 due to royalties on the articles. Overall don't expect to breeze through this class but if you study and pay attention this class should be totally doable.
The class had a lot of reading and depending on your TA could have more assignments. The test is based on lectures and reading, there were things on the test that were only talked about in the lecture and at times there were things on the test that was only in the readings.

Workload is not bad. I find her grading to be a bit tough but overall it is pretty fair. Her lectures are sometimes engaging but also sometimes boring. During this COVID-19 situation, she tried her best to give leniency towards grading. Since this is my second time having her as a Professor (first time was GEOG 145), I will definitely recommend people to take this class over GEOG 145 because that class grading was very harsh and the test was extremely tricky.
Some of these reviews are extremely over the top, almost to the point of projecting undue anger towards the professor. Dr. Faier is one of the kindest and most accommodating professors I've had. I have no doubt that she will make adjustments for you if you are experiencing outside circumstances that make the class difficult for whatever reason (she did for me). Overall I genuinely think she does her best to be inclusive yet fair in her entire approach. Some people will just find something to complain about no matter what. (As a side note, I do agree that the materials were expensive, but in her defense she did this to minimize exploitation)
After reading the other reviews for Professer Faier, I felt very obligated to write one of my own. Professor Faier was extremely honest stating that she has racist and sexist thoughts. Although it is HORRIBLE to even want to admit that, it is the truth. It is completely undeniable that not one person on this planet has not had a racist or sexist thought. Her brutal honesty may have offended people, but it is her story to tell. I, personally, had no issues with professor Faier. I told her that I hated participating in class, and she told me that I could email her with questions before class and that would count as my participation which was much appreciated. The few times I participated in class, I was given dirty looks. We did an exercise to show our privilege, and I mentioned that I never realized how much privileged I truly had as a middle eastern woman. Immediately eyes darted towards me and I am sure people were thinking, this white girl doesn't know her own privilege? We did an exercise about sexism and what men and women were called if they did not adhere to stereotypical gender roles. A girl said the f word, and a classmate sternly said to her "excuse me? you can't say that, how dare you say that". I absolutely agree that she cannot use that word, but that is not how you teach people right from wrong. Professor Faier, a Jewish woman, hello double minority right there, taught the class well. The class is about feminism, and yes it incorporated ideas of race, gender, etc., but it is about feminism. I recently took a class about China and it was taught by a white guy, should I be angry because it was not taught by someone who is Chinese? The worst thing about this class was the forced participation, because the classmates were so damn judgmental. I do not understand how the other review says that the curriculum was adjusted to make the white students comfortable. I do not see anything wrong with the way the course was taught, but hey maybe that is just my privilege talking. Professor Faier taught the class well, she is very well informed and passionate about what she teaches. The one thing I agree with is that the textbooks and other readings were wildly expensive. Anyway, this class was extremely interesting, so don’t be afraid to take it.
10/10 recommend this class if you are interested in slavery or human trafficking. Professor Faier has done a lot of work in human trafficking and she focuses mainly on the Philippines but the class covers more than just sex trafficking. It really gives me a new perspective to think about the world, labor, and many more common concepts that are discussed in humanity courses. The coursereader is a bit expensive but there is really no other things I can complain about. My TA James is also really helpful as well!
I really enjoyed this class despite not even knowing what cultural geography was when I enrolled. Professor Faier was super clear in her lectures and if you take notes on everything and do the readings, it isn't too hard to get an A. The midterm essays are super time consuming, but it only lasts for one weekend and that's pretty much all the work you do for the class. Although we were given the option to skip the final because of COVID circumstances, I know it is nearly identical to the midterm. The readings are an absolute must for the midterm and final (which are nearly all of your grade). Overall I recommend this class as a GE! **I'm selling the course reader for this class in like-new condition! No marks or highlighting. Email islandbeesz@gmail.com **
