Geog 116 This class was so fun and interesting! Im always using the information I learned in this class in other classes and in the real world. I wish I could retake this class just for fun. There was reading and lecture was long (3hrs) but the time goes by fast and the powerpoint are very interesting.

Summer 2020 - Prof Illes was funny and engaging. The class was very accommodating for remote learning as it was asynchronous, minus weekly quizzes on the lecture material. There were three 3-page papers we had to write about movies in different eras of LA history. The final and midterms were solely based off lecture, multiple choice with one or two short essays and were open note. Overall the class was super interesting and made so much sense as someone who has always lived in Metro LA. This class has forever changed my view of LA and it's history. Thank you!

Illes is a very funny, engaging professor in lecture but acts more cold & disinterested in office hours. This course definitely pushed me from being an ArcGIS novice to actually understanding a lot of the things you can do in the program. There are weekly projects which are pretty straightforward because she presents them in a step-by-step tutorial way. She's a fairly easy grader and this class is a great way to walk away with UCLA with a tangible skill that shows that you are capable of learning technology & analyzing data--even if you don't end up pursuing a career that uses GIS.

Professor Illes is a great teacher and very knowledgeable of California. I loved her class as it provided me a deeper insight to the state we live in. Her class grading is based on a midterm (in calss), long essay (you have to visit the place), and final. She is fair and fun. If you want to learn about California take her. Attendance is mandatory as the midterm and final are based on those notes you take. So you must be a good note taker to take her class.

Geog 126 Geography of Extinction Quite possibly one of my biggest personal wastes of money at this school taking this professor. Not only did I basically just review things I had learned from animal encyclopedias when I was a kid, they were 'taught' by an extremely low quality instructor with in of the most caustic personalities I have ever seen on a person. Everything in lectures is in the exams so the class is practically an excercise in mindless typing for most students. The quiet sound of the class is penetrated by the monotonous clacking of keyboards. His is what college has become. All you need to do for the exam is memorize facts and have some kind of opinion for the essay. I can recall community college professors that were light years ahead of Dr. Illes. What a disappointment at a school that is supposedly renown for its world class academics. Illes is such an egomaniac that I wouldn't be surprised if half the positive reviews were written by her,
