Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: A+

As other reviewers have stated, this class is more difficult than other EngComp3's. The course load is heavier and class contribution is important. Assignments included a presentation, a debate, five written responses to the readings (you won't need the textbooks btw), and two essays (5+ pages and10+ pages). Most students do badly on their first midterm (I believe the average was a C) so be sure to do everything that can get you extra credit, as it will boost your grade. Professor Juliano is helpful to those who seek guidance, but book her office hours well in advance or you won't have a chance. Her directions are often unclear or conflicting, but she makes a solid effort in class to take questions and clear up any confusion surrounding her assignments. If you have enrolled in a cluster or any other heavy-workload class, this class will prove especially stressful. That being said, the tight-knit atmosphere was great for making friends, and I learned a lot about time management.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
She grades essays very strictly.
We have to reach class almost 7-8 mins early as she has "Journal" quizzes on readings. In our 2nd essay, 4 people got an F and 1 person a D.
She is a funny, cheerful person and you will learn from her class but her grading is not at all satisfactory.

This class has a bigger workload compared to other english comp classes but your grade does improve over time and she does give a lot of extra credit. She’s also willing to help if you attend her office hours.

I genuinely liked this class and would recommend taking Juliano. I started off the quarter feeling very panic about this course. The theme "theater in politics" was definitely not something I had much background knowledge in especially as a non-US citizen. The first essay did not go well for me, I think I got a 70+ which was a C (even with extra credits). Fortunately it did not count much towards the final grade and as a result I started to go to her office hour (be sure to book early cause it fills up quickly) every week when drafting and revising the second essay, and she was really clear on her expectations for my essay. The topic for the second essay was really flexible (can be about almost anything as long as slightly relevant to one of the readings), and was heavily research-based. Two reading logs every week could be exhausting but I found most of the readings she assigned interesting and not very long. Earning extra credits through reading log was highly probable, and tons of other extra credits were given. I did not expect getting an A+ at all so I guess she was pretty generous when assigning final letter grades.

Overall, the class didn't require much work until later in the quarter. There are weekly documentaries to watch but they were all pretty interesting so it didn't feel like homework anyways. Besides the documentary responses there's one group debate project and 2 final papers that count towards your grade. The workload isn't much but instructions were often confusing or lacking so it made things harder. Fairly easy class but be sure to ask for clarifications!

I took this class fall quarter of freshman year. Dr. Juliano's class is about representation of gender and ethnic groups in media, something I am really not interested in. That's why I didn't really like the class. Before every class there is a quiz on homework, to which you have to arrive super early for. In fact, she starts quizzes before the class should actually start, which I think is kinda illegal but anyway. It wasn't my case, but if you have a class right before the beginning of this one you basically have less time for quizzes than your peers which is absolute nonsense. I feel like I didn't improve too much in my writing. Her prompts are somewhat unclear, especially the second one. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. She actually gives extra credit for the peer editing which is something I wasn't expecting. So swap your essays with your classmates during the quarter. The debates are cool if the teams respect the topic sentence. There's extra credit opportunities all over the place, so make sure you get it. I read she grades harsh but I don't think she was harsh with me. She goes through the slides too quickly and is unclear in letting you know what she wants

This class, although quite a bit of work, is very rewarding. I learned more about writing than I ever will. There a lots of documentaries to watch and few readings then daily response logs and goal setting sheets (easy enough). Only hard parts are the 2 essays and debates. Both essays are about 7 pages each and are due the last day of class so you have a while to work on them but don't (please) leave it for last minute you will regret it. Take this class if you want to be a better writer. ALSO SELLING ONLY REQUIRED TEXT FOR THIS CLASS "A WRITERS REFERENCE 8TH ED" TEXT 9513900670 IF INTERESTED

I love professor Linzi!! She gives so many extra credits and was really able to build a vibrant class where people are encouraged to share their own opinions and anecdotes and I was really able to know everyone in the class. She's also super understanding and forgiving while ensuring we learn as much as possible in the class. This was class split into two: Tuesday and Thursday class. This really helped! Making the class smaller was more effective. The conversations in class were all very relevant to the world today and I felt very connected digitally. We had to write 6 posts and responses on slack about the reading of the week but she gives you lots of space to just ramble about the topics you read about so it was easy to be graded high. We also have to lead a discussion once during the quarter which was super fun! You also get graded for participation which is easy. Just try to talk twice in class but just treat it like you're having a conversation with friends. And lastly, we had a final essay which was around 9-11 pages long. I had trouble choosing a topic but professor Linzi really helped me. I kinda did it last minute so it isn't as amazing as it could have been. Overall, I would LOVE to take a class with Professor Linzi again! Super interesting class to take if you want to do something in digital media in the future.
