Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A

Overall, the class didn't require much work until later in the quarter. There are weekly documentaries to watch but they were all pretty interesting so it didn't feel like homework anyways. Besides the documentary responses there's one group debate project and 2 final papers that count towards your grade. The workload isn't much but instructions were often confusing or lacking so it made things harder. Fairly easy class but be sure to ask for clarifications!

Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A-
Jan. 2, 2020

This class, although quite a bit of work, is very rewarding. I learned more about writing than I ever will. There a lots of documentaries to watch and few readings then daily response logs and goal setting sheets (easy enough). Only hard parts are the 2 essays and debates. Both essays are about 7 pages each and are due the last day of class so you have a while to work on them but don't (please) leave it for last minute you will regret it. Take this class if you want to be a better writer. ALSO SELLING ONLY REQUIRED TEXT FOR THIS CLASS "A WRITERS REFERENCE 8TH ED" TEXT 9513900670 IF INTERESTED

Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A
Dec. 23, 2019

I took this class fall quarter of freshman year. Dr. Juliano's class is about representation of gender and ethnic groups in media, something I am really not interested in. That's why I didn't really like the class. Before every class there is a quiz on homework, to which you have to arrive super early for. In fact, she starts quizzes before the class should actually start, which I think is kinda illegal but anyway. It wasn't my case, but if you have a class right before the beginning of this one you basically have less time for quizzes than your peers which is absolute nonsense. I feel like I didn't improve too much in my writing. Her prompts are somewhat unclear, especially the second one. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. She actually gives extra credit for the peer editing which is something I wasn't expecting. So swap your essays with your classmates during the quarter. The debates are cool if the teams respect the topic sentence. There's extra credit opportunities all over the place, so make sure you get it. I read she grades harsh but I don't think she was harsh with me. She goes through the slides too quickly and is unclear in letting you know what she wants

I took EngComp3D with Professor Juliano and thoroughly enjoyed the class and all of the reading material. Dr. Juliano walks you through all the steps in essay writing and gives you lots of materials and references to ensure success. If you go to class, participate, do the readings, and put some effort into your writing assignments it is very easy to succeed.

Dr. Juliano is also very accessible and wants to help you within reason. Make sure to sign up for office hours in advance because the slots fill up quickly!

As other reviewers have stated, this class is more difficult than other EngComp3's. The course load is heavier and class contribution is important. Assignments included a presentation, a debate, five written responses to the readings (you won't need the textbooks btw), and two essays (5+ pages and10+ pages). Most students do badly on their first midterm (I believe the average was a C) so be sure to do everything that can get you extra credit, as it will boost your grade. Professor Juliano is helpful to those who seek guidance, but book her office hours well in advance or you won't have a chance. Her directions are often unclear or conflicting, but she makes a solid effort in class to take questions and clear up any confusion surrounding her assignments. If you have enrolled in a cluster or any other heavy-workload class, this class will prove especially stressful. That being said, the tight-knit atmosphere was great for making friends, and I learned a lot about time management.

The professor needs to tell the students what she actually wants in the essay and also teach material that would actually help us write better. Also she grades the essays like we are upper class english majors which most of the students in the class are not.

I was really scared of this class because of all the reviews she had saying she was hard and knowing that I am not a strong writer made it even scarier. And yes, this class was tough BUT it taught me a lot. I had to put a lot of effort into this class. I got a D- on the first essay so I was really scared I was going to do horrible in this class after that. But I feel like one of the reasons why I got a bad grade was because I was struggling yet I did not ask for help cause I was afraid to.

So I am telling anyone who takes this class now, IT REALLY HELPS to go to office hours. I went for the next essay and she helped me A LOT, I asked her a ton of questions. Sometimes I even asked the same question more than once cause I was still confused but hey it helped. If you show you want to improve, she will guide you as much as she can. Get as much help as you need.

Then there are other assignments that will boost your grade such as a presentation, debate (I was scared for this too, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be and I am a pretty shy person who does not like doing debates), reading responses and extra credit etc.

My point being, if you are like me who did have this professor as your first choice, don't be afraid. I struggled but I improved as I progressed throughout the quarter and actually ended getting an A- in the class which made me really happy. It is a good learning experience, and if you put in the effort you will be just fine.

Professor Juliano's teaching and grading styles are very straightforward. While it is true that students don't often do as well as they hope in the beginning of the quarter, Linzi is very willing to help students and explain concepts until you improve; thus, students see great improvement in their writing/grade as the quarter goes on. The assignments that are not papers are easy and help your grade too. As long as you make sure to include what she describes in class, you are free to write and discuss almost any topic. I think Linzi's class has helped my writing the most out of all other English/writing intensive classes I've had at school and I would highly recommend her.
