What a sorry excuse for a professor. She has an English degree but doesn't even speak and write proper English. She is very disorganized, and her lectures consisted mainly of her trying to get around technical difficulties to play some slideshows that looked like they were put together by a 4th grader. There is quite a bit of assigned reading, and the readings aren't even interesting like the readings in AA20. It's mostly pretentious, overly wordy, ramblings of people who get off on denouncing the U.S. as a White capitalist regime hell-bent on enslaving Asian Americans. One of these readings was written by the professor herself. That being said, if you manage to slog through the readings, some of them do have substance underneath all the pretentious crap cluttering every sentence. There was even one short story that was actually entertaining. If possible, take Professor Bascara. He is well spoken, well organized, and intelligent, and can make a bs class like this somewhat bearable. Professor Burns, on the other hand, does not speak proper English, is disorganized, and is, well.. you know. I guess that's the difference between an education from Columbia and one from UMass. Overall, the class is pretty easy as long as you do the readings because there are pop quizzes. There are two papers and one big project which are all just bs-fests. 2/10 would not take again.

Spring 2022 - i'm not even done with this class yet but i'm just gonna proceed to say i hate it. The professor was really passionate about what she teaches but i stopped going to lecture after week 2. i'm a stem kid so maybe that's why i can't really dive into any of the creative literary works/media that she presents in class, but as an asian american myself (who is relatively connected to their mother culture) i had zero incentive to learn about anything she shows us. the essay prompts are insanely vague and boring. i live a colorful life and have a lot of cultural stories to tell but the prompts do not allow me to do that. instructions are always super unclear. professor is bad at technology. all she does is read through powerpoints & you basically have to figure out all of the writing/analysis stuff on your own. 0/10 would not recommend.

I wish I never enrolled in this class. She makes her classroom a very uncomfortable environment. If you ask her a question, nine times out of ten she will answer with a nasty response that will make you feel stupid for even asking. I have had nothing but kind, inspirational, and caring professors at UCLA. I do not know why she is allowed to teach here. Maybe the Asian American Studies department does not audit her classes as strictly as they should. The quality of her instruction and overall demeanor as a person is completely unacceptable. I hope she does not continue to teach, she is terrible. I will make sure to write a letter to the Asian American Studies department to let them know about her.

I guess I had very high expectations for the class. The class was structured as following: pop quizzes (we had five throughout the quarter); one timeline project; a Filipino Experience in Los Angeles project; an in-class presentation; and an in-class final. Overall, the class is relatively easy, but you do have to do some work and it consumes time. The professor is a good person, but her teaching methods are not quite effective. The class was disorganized and very hard to follow along. It becomes tedious to go to class as the quarter progresses. I guess that if you like ethnic studies classes, you ought to enjoy the classes. Not my particular interest.
