I learned a lot from this class about law, and I felt like Huppin was a pretty straightforward lecturer who tried hard to make lecture engaging. He seems really serious at first, but you'll see his chill side if you go to office hours. Additionally, he remembers peoples name, which I feel like makes a big difference.

Your grade is comprised of 2 Papers (each 10%-which really help buffer your grade) and a midterm (40%) and final (40%). The papers were fun to write, and I feel like they were graded fairly. The midterm was a little difficult for me, but that's because I had 4 other finals in one week, so I wasn't able to devote as much time to studying as I needed to. The final ended up being online because of COVID-19, and it was exactly like the midterm in terms of the types of questions.

The readings need to be completed if you want to get an A because he asks a lot of multiple choice questions from them. The reading is manageable, but if you get behind one week, it'll suck catching up. Even if you do the readings, if you don't understand how to apply the laws, you'll probably get a B. Also, he mentions things in lecture that aren't on his slides that end up on the test, so I definitely recommend showing up and taking detailed notes.

I do think he slightly curves the class, which brought me from an A- to an A, which I am extremely appreciative of. Overall, if you're up to put in some work, I would definitely recommend this class.

I don't remember what class I took with him. He is a great professor. You wont regret taking him!

I heard a lot of great things about this professor and extremely disappointed with how he handled virtual teaching. His communication and organization skills are embarrassing as a professor with a JD and PHD (which he reminds us of very often). I understand these circumstances are difficult for professors, but they are just as difficult if even more so for students. avoid all virtual classes with him. exams are tough and he does not give enough time to finish. before our midterm and final he didn't even discuss it/mention and instead had irrelevant guest lectures discussing architecture, I'm sorry but I don't see the correlation to mass media. He even tested us about some abstract poem the guest lectures shared relating to a mason jar. I'm not even upset about the rigor of the course but just disappointed with his lack of communication when we aren't able to physically be in a classroom or visit him in office hours. When students raised concerns or asked questions, he avoided providing answers and was extremely defensive for absolutely no reason. He seems like a nice guy, but he wasn't there for his students when we needed it the most. Ignored all of my emails or responded days later when my questions were not even relevant. I will be avoiding all classes with huppin.

Professor Huppin is one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are engaging and thoughtful. I always looked forward to going to his classes and talking with him afterwards.
The workload in his class is incredibly light and he grades fairly easy. You should have no problem getting a good grade in his class if you put in even the minimum amount of effort. More importantly, you will learn a lot and have fun in the process.

This class was extremely interesting. It focused on the first amendment and different court cases related to the first amendment. It would probably be even more interesting during an election year. The professor is a fair grader and is engaging during lecture. There was a midterm, final, and two short papers.

Professor Huppin is amazing!! He keeps lecture pretty interesting while also is very lighthearted and funny sometimes. I went into this class with no background in the material whatsoever and while it could get confusing at times, overall it was not bad. We had live zoom meetings twice a week and all the readings were posted on CCLE. Both the midterm and final were part multiple choice and part short answer. They were not too bad, the only problem I had was with the amount of time we were given. The workload for this class is very light and there is not much reading. I usually never read through the cases because it was really hard for me to understand lol so I just looked up summaries online or watched videos explaining them. There were 2 thought papers which were very informal, only about 2-3 pages long, and which we had a week to do. Almost everyone got a 9/10 or above (the real impact on your grade is the final and midterm which are both worth 40% each).
Huppin was very accommodating (he pushed our midterm back and gave us the day off because of the election) and he also said that he usually lets everyone on the waitlist join the class (at least with the online format we have rn). I would really recommend this class and I had a great experience.

Structure of Class:
* Two tests (midterm and final)
* One fairly short essay about a movie
* One creative art project. Not complicated, he gave every 100% (when I took this class)

Not a difficult class, as long as you study the material before the tests. The material itself is interesting and not difficult to understand, there's just a decent amount of it. From what I remember, some of the content included: Porn, sexual attraction, racial stereotypes, fear of spiders, TV news. Cool stuff, not all theoretical and boring like most other comm classes.

Try to participate during lectures, he appreciates when students speak up. He's a nice guy and this is the second class I took with him. I like Huppin

Super chill class. It was a mixture of lecture and guest speakers on topics that were being discusses. His lectures can be a little long and kind of intense, as he gives you a lot of information on studies and research being done. Take really good notes even when the speakers come. He tends to pull a lot of specific details for tests. We took our exams online so it was helpful to have notes, but the time limit is pretty strict. With that being said, the class is mostly exam based, with the midterm and final being 40% each and then 2 short papers worth 10% each. The papers are pretty easy and graded leniently so they help cushion your grade. Study hard for tests and take super detailed notes and you'll be good.
