I normally don't write reviews, but this professor is awful. His lectures comprise of 10-15 minutes of actual information about the subject and the rest of the class is him ranting about current issues. His grading is awful as he only gives out a certain amount of A's, B's, and C's which means that you may get a lower score if your test is graded last even if you have the same answers as someone who got a higher grade and turned it in earlier (his tests are short answer). He is very sketchy with his grading and the final grades seemed kinda arbitrary. Also, he did not post what we got on our paper or our final which comprised about 60% of our grade, therefore I had to email him to figure out what I got. I did 1.5 points better than someone else in the class on the midterm and we got the same grades for all the other assignments and she received a B while I received an A-, so basically if you want to be graded fairly do NOT take this class. This class caused me so much frustration and I honestly have no idea how a professor like him is allowed to teach at UCLA because he is costing people their chances at grad school due to his stupid grading scale (which he refuses to explain to the students).

Had an asynchronous class with him, absolutely horrible. He was so monotone and made it as difficult as possible to follow the lectures. His lack of enthusiasm has drained already a very draining academic year. He grades on a curve and he does not give any indication of how you did on exams. (I got D on midterm because I "misinterpreted" one of the prompts"). I do not recommend at all.

I didn't do great on the midterm or the one page discussion essays. I thought I could kind of just wing it, but that didn't work out. I studied more for the final and ended up getting an A- when I for sure thought I would get a B. DO the readings and take note of little details, also go to Jepson's office hours! No one really goes and he answered questions about the final for me that really helped.

Great class and awesome professor.
The assigned readings are excellent. Prof. Jepson is gem for the Sociology Dept and what I like most is his politics

Great professor.. He is VERY entertaining in lectures. The only problem, 8am :( !!! But, he is very available to meet (i missed a lot of lectures).. This is not an "easy A" so you do have to read and pay attention in class however there is minimal effort to get a good grade if you are good at retaining information. If not, you might have to study a little harder.

DO NOT GET the Ritzer textbook (its like 80 something dollars and I did not read it once!) he goes over the topics from the Ritzer text in class so just get the coursereader for discussion (like 30 bucks)..
Someone told me not to get the Ritzer textbook but I did not listen and now I am out 80 bucks..

But.. great course, great professor!!!

I liked Jepson. His lectures were pretty interesting and easy to follow. I think the workload for his class is pretty reasonable. I ended up with a B+ in the class but i blame that on my TA. There are 5 mini papers that account for 30% of your grade and my TA was harsh on those so it brought my grade down. But besides that i liked the class overall and I like Jepson. His tests weren't too hard. Considering I studied a day before the final and midterm and got an A on the midterm.

This class was...alright. My expectations of Jepson were high based on the reviews that I read on here. I expected him to make an 8AM class bearable and fun, but boy was I wrong. He was only funny because he would throw out some cuss words and use a good joke every now and then, but in general, the class was pretty boring. I dreaded waking up to go to his class. He wasn't a horrible teacher, and is a good person, but he just wasn't very interesting and lectured off topic too many times. The tests are fair, the multiple choice can be tricky, but for the most part I found them easy. The essay questions are like the TA discussion questions, so hopefully that'll help. For the first midterm, I recommend going to the test bank. He reused a lot of the old questions.

Overall, you can take this class if you want to get the GE requirement out of the way. Make sure you actually work on those papers, because they can screw you over. My TA was very strict with the way she wanted the papers done, which was irritating, but after you submit a few, you get the hang of it. Be concise.

Jepson is a really engaging professor. He really tries to captivate you with the theories that sociology offers. His class was at 8 AM, and I've only missed one of his lectures -- that's saying a lot. Overall, I don't think this class was too difficult: five one-page papers, a midterm, and a final. His tests are pretty straightforward, and he sends out a thorough study guide a week before examinations. However, in order to get a good grade in the class, you must know what your TA's expect from you. You may do decently on the exams, but mediocre scores on the papers may cost you your grade, so make sure to interact with your TA!

He is funny and he does a good job of summarizing what you need to grab from the readings if you didn't understand them. However, I didn't find them too helpful. This class is easy if you have an easy TA. The tiny writing assignments really screwed me over because my TA wasn't helpful even when I asked for him for help. My TA didn't even know the readings that well himself and I felt that he was super inadequate and graded a bit more harshly than other TAs. I ended up with a B in the class but also think that's because I thought the class was so easy. Take the writing assignments very seriously and don't settle for anything than 5/5 or 7/7!!! Don't be fooled they're 30% of your grade! Anyway, selling my course reader. It's highlighted and has some helpful notes in some of the readings but not all: aml211@ucla.edu

Hands down probably, the easiest class ever. I took 101 in the summer. I never went to class. I studied/read 3 hours before the actual midterm. And I studied/read the day before the final. I ended up with an "A" with little effort. This class is ridiculously easy and the grading seems pretty lenient. He gives you a study guide before the test. And the on the tests for his 101 and 102 classes, he lists 10 questions, and you choose 6 that you want to answer. Know the basics and you can BS your way through.
