The class is relatively easy considering you never have to attend lecture. Discussion is helpful but the TAs are completely different in how their class is structured, the work they make their students do, and even the information they give. I do not recommend taking this class as Jepson is uninvolved and doesn't seem to have a point to what he's talking about.
Jepson's a great guy, definitely take the time to talk to him outside of class, he makes himself extremely available and it is totally worth it. However he loves to go off on tangents during his lectures and since they're at 8am and you probably are an efficient note-taker, who knows that they don't need to write down all 6 examples he gave on one concept, you WILL need coffee to stay awake throughout the full lecture. Once again, he's a great guy. Take his course. It's not difficult to get an A, just make sure you have a firm understanding of the material, however you do need to put in the effort.
Great professor.. He is VERY entertaining in lectures. The only problem, 8am :( !!! But, he is very available to meet (i missed a lot of lectures).. This is not an "easy A" so you do have to read and pay attention in class however there is minimal effort to get a good grade if you are good at retaining information. If not, you might have to study a little harder.
DO NOT GET the Ritzer textbook (its like 80 something dollars and I did not read it once!) he goes over the topics from the Ritzer text in class so just get the coursereader for discussion (like 30 bucks)..
Someone told me not to get the Ritzer textbook but I did not listen and now I am out 80 bucks..
But.. great course, great professor!!!
OMG JEPSON!
Jepson was an amazing professor.
1)Super organized, he basically put up outlines of what we would go over each class.
2)Clear and concise, one of the only professors I know who knows exactly what they want the student to know and says it clearly
3)He was really able to relate the theories to not only contemporary life - but student/young adult life.
4)Jepson really engaged with his students, so yes we go over the different theories but he takes questions and example from the class and often poises questions back to us.
He's just an awesome professor and super hilarious.
Honestly the easiest way to tell - his 8am class was ALWAY packed. He made going to morning lectures worth it.
If you can - take him.
I am very disappointed that this course was subjected to an 8am time slot. Were it offered later in the day, I believe I would have been much more successful and would have approached it with cognitive abilities beyond that of a sleeping person. It was difficult to connect the dots between Prof. Jepson's lectures and the material in the reader and the text. He packages his lectures in a very easily digestible manner, I unfortunately am not functional enough that early in the day to effectively pick it all apart. Great class, great professor, horrible timing for me.
I'm now taking 102 and 134 with Jepson. He's very knowledgeable and his lectures are interesting. He makes a 8am-2hr class worthwhile! Yes I have 8am classes everyday. He really knows how to teach and he frequently relates those dry theories to empirical lives. Go to his office hours! He's very nice and he will explain thoroughly even through e-mail. He's not like some professors, who don't care your questions in e-mails or just neglect those messages. Jepson's class is a must-take! You will learn a lot!
If you are waitlisted, don't even waste your time hoping he'll add you because he won't. I was number 1 on the waitlist and no one dropped the course. I talked to him about it & told him I had attended every lecture and every discussion, but he didn't care. You get dropped after 2nd week if you're waitlisted fyi. For the 2 weeks I attended though he was a great lecturer. His topics are very interesting, he relates them to real life, and he makes a few jokes now and then.
