Professor Andrews makes his lectures very very clear for us to understand instantly before class is over. His teaching methodology emphasizes both on math intuition and on reasoning. His twice-weekly office hours are more than helpful. Having a wonderful TA partner as well. His personality is brilliant and amiable and he is the professor we all love.
If you attend his office hours and do the homework and practice exams, you'll most likely pass the class and exceed your expectations. Professor Andrews is very accessible, and is willing to explain and figure out a way to help you understand concepts from lecture during office hours.
Took Math 31A in the winter with him and Math 31B in the spring with him. He's a great professor who explains the concepts well and understands student's concerns. Both classes had two midterms, a final, and 9 homework assignments due each week. Both classes were pretty straightforward calc but I found the series and sequences section of 31B challenging. He does spend a lot of time going over it though, which I found cemented the material and helped me understand. Overall a real cool guy!
Andrews is AMAZING. His tests are fair (he usually tells you what will be on them), and if you study hard you will score well (but if you don't study you're screwed). I am not the best at math, so I didn't have an amazing grade, but he is an awesome professor who I wish I had taken for 31B. His office hours are fantastic because he is incredibly approachable, and he will often crack jokes. He is truly superb.
Michael is a very nice guy! He play around with us students, and he always talk some funny things, but I sometimes cannot catch the point, because I am a international student...... And he has a lot of office hours. However, when you asked him some questions, he would broaden the topic to some extent like philosophy??? I have no idea of what he is talking about sometimes. But definetely go to his office hour. Ask him exactly which point you don't understand, or he will just like talk to you something really really abstract... and kind of deviate from what you are asking.
In sum, he is a very good good lecturer. Desfinetely go to his lectures. I missed one of his lectures, and it just fked me up... So lectures are really important for his class.
And his handouts are awesome, and you can give him advice on how he clarify some concepts. He will listen to you and revise some of his teching.
His tests are just pretty fair, or somewhat very easy... Just memorize and understand all the concepts, and the homework problems. Then, you are all set.
This is not a hard A.
I screwed up in my first 4 quize. And get a full mark in the last one, and do pretty well in the final, and obtained an A. You can drop like 2 quizzes.
Andrews should be your choice for MATH 131A.
Overall Andrews is a good professor. He explains the material pretty well and makes sure to make the lectures engaging especially for those who consider math to be "not their subject". The workload isn't too bad, about 20 problems a week. The tests weren't easy, but they were fair. There was certainly a time issue on the first few midterms, so you need to know the material and work fast. I would take Andrews again.
Having taken Calculus in high school, I found this class very easy, but Andrews really solidified some details that I had forgotten. Lectures are helpful and often hilarious (Andrews is super funny), homeworks are long but useful for the time-tight midterms, and the final was fair and took me only 90 min (we get 3 hours). Overall, great experience - I'm taking 31B with Andrews again next quarter!
