I did the LGBT Studies internship course with Fleming and absolutely loved it. He's very sweet and genuinely wants to get to know his students & serve as a mentor. The class requires you to find an internship but Fleming provides you with a list of organizations to contact and he basically knows the leaders of every one so it's easy to get one. You have to do about 7 hours/week of the internship which is a lot of time but other than that, the course is completely easy. There are weekly guest speakers from various LGBTQ organizations who were very engaging & interesting. You have to do a 3 page paper on your internship experience and THAT'S IT! No midterm or final. The grade distribution speaks for itself--I'm not sure how it'd be possible to not get an A in this class.

LGBT 187: Institutions and Organizations is by far the best class UCLA has to offer. Professor Fleming is one of the most caring instructors I've come across. He's very easy going, funny, fun to look at, and brings the most notable CEO's from well known LGBT organizations to class. This guy clearly has a lot of connections.

Basic outline of the class:

YES, this course requires an internship at a LGBT organization and you WILL HAVE to secure a spot by end of the second week. The sooner you submit your cover letters and resumes, the better. Some places take forever to get back to you. To make the most of your experience, pick a site outside of campus. Most people default to the LGBT center on campus because they can't find a site elsewhere.

You're expected to complete 10 hours each week at your internship site and submit weekly journal entries.

Final Exam consists of a final paper.

This class does require a lot of time because of the internship requirement, but don't be discouraged. It's very straightforward and doable. I've had an wonderful experience at my site and learned so much. You'll also be exposed to AMAZING guest speakers that you probably won't ever get to see in life. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning more about the LGBT community. You don't have to be gay to take this class, but it would't hurt ;)

Professor Fleming is WONDERFUL. He comes back each spring to teach the Internship in an LGBT Organization class, and I have to say it is one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA. He brings INCREDIBLE speakers to class, and facilitates casual but really engaging discussions. Class is fairly short, since he doesn't want to waste your time (trust me, some days you'll wish it was longer!). He grades very fairly, and centers the assignments around your personal learning and development. I hope he sticks around to teach this in the future!
