Fall 2020 - I had a 4.0 before I took Suman. He only grades on 1 paper, 1 midterm, and the final. His test are all short answer and essay and are frankly ridiculously subjective. I requested the TA go over the test with me and he kept telling me that some of my answers were right even though he had marked them wrong. It was incredibly frustrating. My advice, avoid Suman at all costs if you can. I'll never take another class with him again.

Spring 2020 - Due to the pandemic, this class was pretty different from its usual course. Nonetheless, I worked together with a group to complete the research paper. Suman was very helpful and we met with him every week on zoom to update him on our progress. Was very interesting and I learned a lot. Would highly recommend!

I took this class over the summer, and thank god it was open notes, but not open book. Suman is a harsh grader, points are subtracted for no apparent reason. He teaches from a biological/evolutionary perspective, and one of the books he uses (Gender Gap) has the nerve to speculate men are better at math and more creative than women. Bottom-line, men are geniuses, while women are merely muses whose job is to applaud the men???!!! Wow,they actually allow this B.S. to be preached in CS classes where 80% is female? Evolutionary psychology reinforces gender stereotypes, promotes homophobia, and justifies the status Quo. This is a pretty disgusting pill to have to swallow being a feminist myself. Be prepared to spit out every insignificant detail on the exams, because just like CS 10, it is all about memorization. One might expect that upper-division classes are designed to stimulate our critical thinking skills, but alas, regurgitation it is.

This review is for CS 145 (American Sitcom). This class was a torture! The books assigned for this class are written by Feminists who are gender studies majors from who knows where. Instead of concentrating on Civil Rights movement and all related things of 60s-90s, these "authors" are taking their time to talk about Sexual life of women, female empowerment, many chapters about gays, and other irrelevant things. In one example, they devoted entire section to Sex and the City saying that it 100% reflects on female desires of today. Yeah right. In another instance, they do voted several chapters to talk about Gay culture in American sitcom. The worst part is that half of the midterm and the final are based on these books and ask for a specific answer: "What does Will's kissing of Grace tells you?" Note that Will is gay. It is not a written book but a compilation of different articles written in different styles and sometimes contradicting each other. As for the TA, Juanita is an animal. She literally took off a point from every section of my essay and said that it had a bad structure. Really? Structure is one out of five criteria, each worth 5 points. In conclusion it was a complete torture, unless you are fascinated about Sitcoms, feminism, gay culture, and learning about something that will not be useful in your life! Sum an seems to be a nice guy, but the subject stinks and grading is horrible and biased - check his grade distributions and you will see.
