You better bring your A game with this professor. Everything he writes on the board is fair game but there are quizlets out there to help you. Nothing in this class is given on the midterm and final. They grade very harshly so you have to have exact wording.
I took this class in my first quarter at UCLA, and it was definitely a challenging class. Suman doesn't use any slides during lectures, although he will occasionally write a key word on the blackboard. If you go to class and focus, take good notes on what he says, and regurgitate your notes on the tests, you'll be in good shape. Another important thing is to have good reading notes for the exams. Suman allows you to take 10 pages of notes on the readings into the exam, so write detailed (but tiny, so you can fit more info) notes and you'll have no problem with any questions regarding the readings.
Mr. Suman is a good professor who definitely cares about the material he is teaching. He doesn't use slides or let you take notes on your laptop which I didn't like. Sometimes the lectures were long and boring, but others were fun and engaging. I would recommend this class but it is definitely difficult and requires a lot of work.
I would not recommend taking this class if you are not interested in being a comm major. It’s a decently difficult class that requires meticulous notes and reading. He wants you to write on the exactly what he said in class on tests, often word for word. With that being said, the class was extremely interesting, and Professor Suman was actually super nice. I missed the final last minute for personal reasons and he literally let me retake the final the next quarter. If you’re up for the challenge, this class is definitely worth it!
Comm 10 was honestly a great experience. We cover interesting topics and Suman keeps the class engaged even without slides. Be advised to write down everything he says because he will mark down specific words if not used on the test. He says there are no "magic words" but there are! Memorization is key. If you go into office hours or approach him after class he will be a bit awkward at first but as you engage him more he warms up to you and will help you understand the concepts in class.

When giving the presentations he is not clear enough which makes it difficult to write down notes. He talks a lot without being clear and makes the lectures boring to the point you want to fall asleep. He also gives many articles with a lot pages to read so you write notes down which are either on your midterm and final. After writing pages of notes and studying for your midterm/final, you end up either barely passing them or failing them. The midterm/final is all different to material you write on your notes so if you take this class just try your best.
Goddamn this was the hardest fought A- of my life and it's a friggin GE. I'm a math major so writing stuff is not my forte - this class has A LOT of writing, for instance for the final exam I wrote 20 sides of notes with hardly more than a square inch empty on each page. As for the lectures, every one of them involved a lot of writing, say around 5-10 sides of notes. Also, if you miss even a single random line of Suman's in class then you risk dropping major points on exams. In my case, I memorized a list containing six items however it actually had seven, making me lose 3 marks (out of 45) on the midterm.
Fortunately, Suman is organized in the stuff he makes you write as it is usually all lists of stuff which makes them simple to remember and cross check with friends. Also, the content was pretty interesting, especially the first half of the syllabus. I wouldn't say it was worth the time investment and headaches however.
Overall, this class is hard as f*** so if you're looking for an easy GE then look somewhere else and don't make the mistake I did. This class is a weeder class for Comm majors and is not to be taken lightly.
I was unaware going into this class that it is considered a weed-out for the Comm major. The tests are difficult and require a good amount of studying. Since lectures are not accompanied with slides nor recorded, it is essential you write as much down as possible (easier said than done considering it's a 2 hour lecture). Fortunately, most of the material is at least somewhat engaging and nothing is too technical or too in-depth to understand. If you need this class for a GE, look elsewhere. If you need it for the major, it's doable - you just need to put in the time.
