This class is exactly like other reviews on Bruinwalk. If you put in the right amount of work, you'll be able to get a good grade in the class. Don't be scared to ask your TA or Suman for help because they're willing to help you. If you want a good grade, don't slack on this class! It's easy to fall behind and procrastinate, but you'll be making your life a lot harder and risk not getting a good grade. It's honestly not a difficult class if you do the work and study. Midterm and final should be pretty straightforward. The only thing I would work on a lot would be the paper, so go to the UWC and meet up with your TA to discuss your ideas.

If you're looking to be a communications major, this is a good class to take (not only bc it's required) but because you're introduced to almost every subject from the field. Here's how to get an A and succeed in the class (at least how I did it):
- Start your essay way in advance, I went in with an outline and thesis topics Week 3. TALK TO YOUR TA, thoroughly. The essays are the hardest part, and I got an A on it.
- You don't have to write down everything the man says. Write down the concept from the list, with one or two examples that you think you'd remember for the test. Pay attention, and you'll be fine with lecture. He is very clear about what he expects from you on the tests.
- If you can get Sonja as a TA, she's the best and is one of the most helpful TAs in the Comm dept.
- Study 5 days in advance, there are lots of helpful quizlets I used to relearn a lot of the material. Saying things verbatim on the tests is rewarded in this class.

You will do fine. There's a lot of work. START THE ONLINE READINGS ASAP. Do not leave them until last minute. I know some people whose hands were dead by the time the midterm rolled around bc they were writing too much. I got all my online readings done a week before the tests so I could use that time to study purely lecture material.

I got As on both midterm and final, but they grade paper really really harsh. During office hour my TA said that my paper deserves at least an A, so I didn't pay much attention on details such as spelling and space. I ended up getting a B+, and if I had one thing to tell you guys, it is DETAILS!!! Imagine as if you're publishing a paper on a official magazine and you'll do fine. The exams are not hard as long as you remember everything. You don't have to memorize all his examples, but be sure to remember one for each concept that you feel confident to talk about. For the essay, just remember the main points and utilize it in your scenario. You don't have to include everything or reiterating the same things on the essay over and over again, but be sure to use the concept to your example! Definitely not an easy A but still doable.

Overall, this class was so much work. Yes, I did get an A, but it was such a pain. Second of all, I literally came out of the final feeling horrible. I was sure I had messed up the essay questions, and I was scared of getting a B-! My best tip is to go to your TA, and really get to know them (after all, they grade your essay). In all though, this class is really useless. While the information is kinda fun to learn, it's just mindless regurgitation to weed out prospective Comm majors. I was really scared all my work would be for a terrible grade, but I guess hard work really does pay off. Good luck!

For anyone thinking about taking this class as a GE (meaning you're not in the major), it can be scary reading all these reviews screaming at you "DON'T TAKE THIS IS A GE". Sure, maybe the class has nothing to do with your major, but if you're taking it as a GE it will be completely fine don't freak out.

You will have to write down pretty much everything that comes out of his mouth but he lectures in a way that makes it so that you're not struggling to remember what he said .02 seconds ago. He takes pauses and repeats what he says often. Sure its tiresome just listening to him lecture (no slides sorry!) but the topics can be interesting and everything in the first 5 weeks is so organized so it will be easy to take notes.

His midterm and final are a different story. They are difficult but only because you pretty much have to remember definitions and examples word for word (so write down things the way he says them!!). Just study though! I recommend Quizlets online because essentially you're going to be studying words and their word for word definitions.

Start on your paper early ok!! He does grade harshly (but he does curve the grade, or at least he did with my lecture). At least know what you're going to write about before the deadline approaches (trust meeee!). Also, I recommend talking to your TA about your idea and also visit the writing center cause they help!

The research requirement isn't as daunting as it sounds, trust! Get it done early though. Start checking as soon as they give you a username and password for the sign-up website because toward the end of the quarter, the opportunities start going away. The research isn't even that hard you're just taking tests and surveys and stuff.

You're going to be okay. If your goal is an A+ then maybe this is not the class for you, but you'll pass if you take this class seriously. Study, read the articles he gives you with enough time!!! You'll be okay (:

Weeder class. Be prepared to memorize ad verbatim what Suman says in lecture (this is not an exagerration in the slightest). You will be writing notes for hours straight and memorizing each of the definitions’ fine nuances once exams arrive.

Even if your definition really has no differences from their own, arbitrated ones, you will likely be marked off. I’m not saying this to act whiny, but this just is their grading process. It’s just straight, rote memorization, and trust me, there are a lot of other potential Comm majors who have more at stake in this class than you do, assuming you’re taking it as a GE. It’s really, really not worth it, as there are other classes which have more relaxed requirements. You learn a lot, I guess, but in the end, all that material you crammed will exit as soon as it came.
