Great teacher. Lectures were interesting, material was clear and relevant, he had an open mind, and he was good about class participation/comments. The tests were very straight forward and exactly what the readings and lectures taught. I loved this class and would take another with him anytime. A bonus is that this class will give you very relevant skills that you can use after graduation.

Before finding out my grade, I thought no matter what I get in the class I am so happy to have taken the conflict class because I can honestly say I learned a lot. My grade reflected this attitude. I did really well in the class, but this was the first time I had a passion for what I was learning. I was having a lot of conflicts with roommates at the time so the class really allowed me to understand different situations more clearly. I loved going to class. Usually 3 hour classes kill me, but not with Malamuth. He is actually quite a naturally funny guy. (he kinda looks like Jack Nicholson at certain angles, too... kinda random). The videos we watched were so cheesy and hilarious. literally taken from the 80s with horrible acting. The material you read is a self help kinda book and a textbook on conflict. He also includes slides that have some material not covered in the readings. Overall, an ESSENTIAL practicum class. Conflict management is a very important skill.

Winter 2017 - Pretty easy class, but lots of material and anything is up for testing. He gives "study hints" which kind of gear you towards the tested topics... but not really. I didn't use the textbook at all, and while there are a lot of concepts in the "7 Principles" book, I didn't read that at all either. All the important information is on his slides. BUT sometimes his slides are kind of unclear so it still helps to go to class. There are three group debates that were pretty chill and a nice way to process the course information. There was also a big extra credit opportunity, at least when I took this class. Tests aren't super easy but I believe the class gets curved.

I went into this class hoping that it would be really exciting and fun, but it was so boring. Basically the whole class is based on research on pornography and mostly on Malamuth's own research. It might be a little intersting, but the way that he conveys it is so boring. Plus we were all bogged down by the crazy amounts of reading he made us do. It was really an unmanageable amount, and we had to know all of the material for our exams. Overall, our exams weren't too difficult, but it was just hard to keep up with the reading that was included in the tests. His lecture style is very resesarch-like and academic rather than talking to us on our level. He also tends to digress and elaborate on things way too much. One whole lecture could have been condensed to about 20 minutes worth of speaking. His wife lectured for us a couple of times since he was out of town or on religious vacation. I think that she was a better and more interesting prof. Even though they used the same exact Powerpoint slides, she conveyed ideas clearly and concisely in a more interesting manner. He encourages participation, but most people were scared to say anything since he takes a defensive or antagonistic approach to answering questions and defeating any ideas you might have. Easy but tremendously boring class.

class: Comm 111 Professor Malamuth is pretty awesome. Sometimes he gets a little boring because he reads right off the PowerPoint slides but he makes the class entertaining and enjoyable. I received a bad grade in this class because I REALLY slacked off and didn't keep up with the readings, but if you put in some effort you won't have any trouble. This was probably my favorite class because EVERYTHING you learn can be applied to your everyday life...this class really teaches you valuable information for dealing with conflicts in your life. Take this class and learn something important

Class taken: Comm 111 Went to all the classes, did all the readings and studied. The first half of the quarter was okay because he actually lectured. The second half, we had 3 guest lectures and watched a lot of videos. For some reason I got a C on the final and an A on the midterm. I ended up with a b+ in this class. I have no idea why! I have a 3.7 GPA so I know I am not stupid, and I gotten all A's or A-'s in the comm classes i have taken. The midterm was easy because it was actually based from a textbook and lecture. I have no idea what happened on the final. It was mainly based off a self-help book that taught you how to deal with conflict. However, the ambiguous questions were asked in a way that even if you did study, you wouldn't have known the answer. It did not test on the material but asked questions that were not related to the main point. Overall it is a fun class to take (its literally like a self-help course) however, the grading style was not fair.
