Professor Greene is amazing. She shows so much support and concern for her students it's incredible. She doesn't mind explaining things over and over again. Her patience and love for teaching make her an amazing instructor.

I had Professor Greene for Math 1.

I honestly found her lectures to be pretty helpful in explaining the key concepts of the chapters, yet she explains it in a way so you still have to read the chapter and do the example problems to take the tests and do the homework (which in my opinion, is a good thing). However, from a little more than halfway into the course, she started being less and less organized and by the time we hit trig, she was so dispersed we didn't really learn anything about it. So, yeah, now I'm scared for calculus.I'm not sure how good she is at teaching this class during other quarters, but apparently this time she had some personal family shit going on so she was distracted.

The grading structure was as follows:
Written HW - 10%
Online HW - 10%
Midterm 1 - 20% (pretty easy)
Midterm 2 - 20% (study a LOT for this one, it'll hit you like a brick)
Final - 40%

Some random info :
She is a different person on the computer. She sends aggressive and threatening emails that made me pretty intimidated to tell her about a mistake in my grade (which she happily fixed, by the way).

Do the freaking homework. It's not hard at all, so it's a waste of points not to get it done.

Ask for help when you need it. Don't ask Greene over email though. (Personally, I didn't need any, but I think my TA was pretty helpful to the people that did)

So, in all, I'd give Greene a 6/10 for overall quality. No bitterness, I mean, I got an A in the class (score). Maybe she won't have as much personal b.s. going on when you take it.

Honestly, she makes math more difficult than it really is suppose to be. If i can avoid her I will. I cannot stand her, her existence bothers me. I dont get why people become teachers if their ultimate goal is not going to help students. Get into another profession if you are not going to be good at what you do! I don't undertand the meaning of worthless teachers who believe everyone is at the same academic understanding at them. Your are literally useless to students trying to understand the concepts! btw. I know she be smoking that sohcahtoa before she write the test. My blood boils thinking about her.

Okay honest review here.

Prof Greene is an odd one. In her emails she'll send you before the course starts she's gonna come off as super rude/impatient/mean/etc. And throughout the whole quarter her emails are always like that. She emails CONSTANTLY, at least once a day or just about, and a lot of the time it's to tell people to stop coming to her office hours with silly questions or to stop emailing her questions.

But in class she is SO sweet, like whoa. She gives off a really grandmotherly feel. It's her way of lulling you into a false sense of security before her inner beast is unleashed.

Midterm 1 was easy. It's precalc, anyone with half a brain is gonna breeze through the first part of the class. By the time you get to midterm two, things get a bit harder. But midterm two is TOUGH, and I mean it. For Fall 2012, the class average on midterm II was 52%.

Breakdown: Online hw, hand in hw, two midterms, and a final. The online homework is easy points so definitely make sure to score 99 or 100% if possible. You can keep guessing answers until you get it right.

The hand in hw is kinda a bummer. Due every Friday lecture, it's graded on correctness. Lowest score is dropped. Midterm one, like I said, is easy don't sweat it. Midterm 2, just review everything again and again. I just kept redoing all the example problems from the book (because she's in love with the book) and it helps because most of the questions follow those examples.

The final is a lot like midterm 2. Just do the example problems and make sure you have things memorized solid, like identities and stuff.

Overall, not a terrible class, not wonderful. Not gonna lie, I skipped all her lectures after week one except those on Friday, and only because hw was due then. If math isn't your strong point, I do recommend taking her course because at the very least she goes slow enough to make it pretty easy to follow her lectures. Just make sure you study harder problems on your own.

To everyone who said they had a bad time with Professor Greene in Math 3A, they are just a bunch of whiners who just didn't study hard enough. I think she's an amazing professor who perfectly balances teaching and independent study- essentially, teaching but not to the point of spoon feeding.

A little background about me: I entered math 3A with a great amount of fear because I never took calculus in high school. Everything that I learned in 3A was new to me. Mind you, I wasn't "naturally" bad at math, I just had a bad experience with math in high school.

Professor Greene's lectures are very helpful because she gives you a strong foundation to go on to do more difficult math problems. She doesn't spoon feed you and she greatly care about your grades. But most importantly, her midterms/ finals are very fair and don't contain any surprises- they are challenging however. The best thing about her class is that she "dumbs down" difficult calculus concepts so that students can understand it. I enjoy her class because I feel as if my efforts in her class actually translated to my grade which is more than I can say for most professors.

Overall, I think this class is great for anyone who had a bad time with math in high school and needs a good foundation for future calculus classes. A great way to do well in her class is to do practice problems that you don't feel comfortable on- don't just stick to derivative practice problems. Overall, if I got an A in her class and I didn't go to her office hours and missed every discussion, you can too. I highly recommend this class!

I didn't hate math before, but i do now

Her method is to throw loads of problems on you and the only way to be successful looks like is to attend her office hours or ta office hours and get help.

Why can she not teach the material you need to know in lectures?

Seriously, Why can she not teach how to do homework or what to know for the class in lectures?

I went to every lecture this quarter, and after getting my final grade, time would have been better spent in bed instead of getting up early sacrificing my grade not only in this class and all my other classes. Seriously, did not need to see her face this quarter or see her prove theorems, did it help on my exams and final, nope.

Lecture was absolutely pointless. It did not help with solving homework problems or exams. The only one that mattered was the one before the final when she gave out a worksheet with one or two problems that appeared on the final.

Instead of giving us less problems to focus to get the concept, this class becomes pure memorization, with loads of problems, 3 practice exams for each midterm and final, reviewing of notes, buy an extra calc supplement. print this print that etc. etc. etc.

The one time I don't look at lecture notes and those two problems on the final from the worksheet, it appears, great, when im looking through three practice exams and doing extra homework problems assigned last week, i didnt expect to get gratefully screwed over there

I dedicated so much time to class and the final result was an f u to me and my grades this quarter.

Seriously, I don't know how everyone else fared to get A+'s or great grades and what not, going to office hours ta office hours copying homework before turning it in collaborating whatever, everything i had to do by myself and staying up late to do work waking up early to get to class, neglecting another class's work for this

with averages around 50% on second exam and final, she was not a great professor. shouldve done better in calc in high school, because this teaching of math is a no no, in hs, at least i built intutition and confidence, i have none now after this class

working my butt of in the end for a C and an additional f u in all my other classes this quarter

effort =/= success as i am getting in education and in life

To bee completely honest, she was a good professor... I thought she explained concepts well. However, she sent rant e-mails to all her students about certain things she finds annoying and weird random crap which I thought was stupid. For my quarter, both her midterms were easy. The first midterm was harder than the second and people averaged around a 78%... the second one basically half the class got 100%. Although these midterms were easy, they were also out of a small amount of points... meaning if you got like 1 problem wrong... you'd get lowered to like an 88%. Her midterms had multiple choice on them, so for those, no partial credit. Both midterms were easy and then when the final came, everyone did badly. I got an 85% on the first midterm, an 88% on the second since I missed ONE multiple choice problem and that screwed me over. And since the final was out of 65 points... I missed like 4 and it went to like a 66% which I thought was total bullshit. I knew the material... the tests were just out of so little points and if you missed a little, you were basically at the bottom since they were so easy that everyone else got 100%s. Overall I got a B in the class, when I thought I knew the material well enough to get at least an A-, but oh well.

This quarter for Math 3A, Greene tested out a new textbook. Usually, all Math 3A Professors use the Claudia Neuhauser book. She chose to use the Fredrick Andler book, which deals with "Discrete Time Dynamical Systems." Let me just say- I HATED THIS BOOK. It made calculus a lot harder than it needed to be and we were introduced to material that I had never in my life seen before...

Now about Professor Greene... She's a sweet person.. well sometimes. I have mixed feelings for her. She became a lot harsher with grading than she ever was before.. and she is really mean at random times... Like one time she bursted out in lecture saying she was going to start teaching and if we didn't pay attention she would still test us on it (she walked in a little late and that's the first thing that came out of her mouth). Another time she scolded about homework and she is big on neatness. You lose points if your work is not neat. Oh and she randomly sends out mean e-mails like "Go to your TA's for help, I cannot help you all the time" if you ask for a re-gade, she says drop your paper off I will not regrade in front of you and she will return it with no changes... Even if you deserved the points... That's all I have to say to that...

The midterms were difficult, but not too difficult... Now the final.. wow. That was the hardest final I have EVER taken. What I did not like the most? It was part multiple choice. I hate multiple choice on a mathematical exam because if you miss a negative or you did the right steps but got the wrong answer... well there goes your points... and there were two free response questions (WHICH WERE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BY THE WAY) Most of the class took the full three hours to complete the exam...

I actually quite liked the new Adler textbook she experimented with, and it probably made Math and Calculus easier for me. I was never good at theorems, proofs and the like, and I was thankful that this textbook cut out as much of it as possible. Even though the material was new and Discrete Time Dynamical Systems were unfamiliar to most, the concepts were definitely not difficult to grasp or comprehend.

Professor Greene may not be completely professional at times, i.e. she can get angry and rage at us, but she is definitely one of the most caring and concerned professors I've come across. She takes as much free time out of her schedule as possible to help us before midterms and finals and makes sure that her students have their questions answered. I was very grateful that she held so many office hours because my TA, Joshua Lampkins, was completely and utterly useless.

She does make the midterms more straightforward for a lot of people and if you understand how to do all the homework questions she assigns, you'll do well in them. Unfortunately, this implies that she has to make the final harder. The final had 20 MCs and 2 word problems and strangely, I found the MCs trickier than the word problems. That being said, if you know how to do all the homework questions she sets, and understand the logic behind the material thoroughly, you'll do well.

I got an A+ for this course and I was not expecting to do so well. People who find her difficult or find this course difficult need to change their study habits; go to her office hours for anything you feel remotely confused about.
