Class was an easy A as long as you did the reading. Patrick Wen is a really cool professor, and he is very clear on the material you need to know for the essays/tests.

Class material was very straight forward and easy and professor was very clear on class expectations and material.

This class was a breeze. I personally actually really enjoyed it! Not just because of how simple it was, but the readings are interesting and I really had fun with them. It's all literature and folklore, so it was fun and somewhat nostalgic.

A pretty easy class overall. Didn't go to most of the lectures near the end of quarter. His midterms are not relevant to his lectures so you basically don't even have to go to class. Hi y'all, I'm a freshman who literally just took the class and let me tell you one thing, this class is complete and utter bullshit. It is one thing that Professor may be super interested in what he says and what he wants to share with us, but it is another if he makes them interesting and relevant for us. The materials listed on the syllabus are ultimately, different from the things he "teaches" in class. Moreover, he rambles on and gets lost in his bullshit every singe class... Prepare yourselves, this class is boring af period. As long as you are good at bullshitting, you'll do just fine. If you're not, you might want to reconsider.

Prof. Wen is a cool dude. There was really nothing much for this class. Easy A.

Grade Calculation:
1 Essay - 10%
Socratic Questioning (randomly calls on someone during lecture) - 10%
Midterm 1 - 40%
Midterm 2 (counts as the final) - 40%

Prof. Wen gave us all full credit for the essay we didn't have to do because the lecture hall was locked (LOL) and we couldn't enter and discuss it the week it was due. Normally, the only way to get out of the essay was to volunteer yourself as an actor for the play we were reading in class.

You don't really need to go to lecture as he said personally that items from the lecture are not needed in order to complete the midterms. The only reason you would go is because he would sometimes randomly call on people during lecture and ask them questions about the week's reading. But, the chances that he would call on you is pretty rare because in total there were only around 10 people max, called out during lecture during the entire term.

The midterms were fair and relatively easy. He provides 2-3 prompts for you to answer based on the readings (they are not cumulative). You could probably get away with reading half of the books required and reading a summary for the other half because there's a good chance one of the books you actually read will be a prompt (I recommend reading the books that he goes over heavily). He also includes prompts on the movies screened during lecture too.

* Tip: If you see a large amount of athletes in a class, that usually means that you're in an easy class. And this class had a lot of NCAA athletes and actual Olympians!

** Another Tip: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SAVING THIS CLASS FOR YOUR JUNIOR OR SENIOR YEAR. This class can serve as a buffer and grade booster between your harder upper division classes.

Took this class during the summer and while this review is under Professor Wen, he only supervised it and we never saw him at all. The teaching was left to the TA, Luke Beuerlein, so most of what I say in this review relates to him, not Wen.

People are not joking when they say this class is easy. I did very little studying/preparation and got an A+ with ease. That said, the workload is relatively heavy because you only have 6 weeks in the summer and there are a lot of books to get through. Although I got an A+, getting through this class was a struggle because of how boring it was. Luke obviously tried his hardest to give engaging lectures but 1. nobody gave a shit about the material so they never talked during discussions making it very silent and awkward and 2. it felt like it was his first time teaching a class so he stumbled a lot.

Midterm/final was 4 or 5 identification questions (who the author of the work is, the title, and the significance of the passage) with 1 essay. They were absurdly easy but only if you actually did the reading. Overall really easy but boring class

This class is a joke.
