Wow. Took this class online during corona, but still favorite class I have ever taken. I literally was excited when writing my essays (especially the Grammar B). Randy is the sweetest human, and his way of life will really make you think about yours. Only two essays the entire quarter, and two mini group projects, but this class really lets you get creative and investigate careers and climate issues you care about. Amazing amazing amazing
Randy is an amazing teacher. He runs his class like a graduate student seminar which is refreshing. You can think of it as a giant participatory discussion section as opposed to a traditional lecture presentation. He is funny and lectures fly by. In terms of "homework" there really isn't much your paper grades make up 80% of your overall grade so put lots of time and effort into them and don't leave them to the last minute and you will do exceptionally well. Also, his class will teach you how to write and feel comfortable supporting your own opinions in a more natural personal way. The two essays you write are Traditional format and Grammar B format. The Grammar B essay looks difficult at first but I found it to be the more fun one in the end. He makes you write it from the perspective of your desired profession 5, 10, 15 years down the road and you get to use many different styles (Emails, Linkedin profiles, Diary entries, Eye Charts, etc.). Overall this CLASS is VERY FAIR. You get out of it what you put in. If you slack and procrastinate on your essays and you don't participate in class you won't do well in this class. But if you are diligent and stay on top of the course load and participate and come prepared to class you will do just fine! Randy is very open to meeting with students as many times as they need and he will give you comments and suggestions to improve your paper if it is not already an A paper. Go for it! Sign up for this amazing class! (If you can get in that is since its only 22 people per class)
Randy is my favorite professor that I have had so far at UCLA! The lectures were super fun and weren't ever boring to go to. The required reading and work for the class was very reasonable and there wasn't any "busy work" given by the professor. Overall, I think he does as much as he can to help his students write and succeed during their time here. I would take every course with him if I had the chance!
