YALL these reviews are bad for a reason. She may be nice and sweet but her grading is insanely hard. The first essay we submitted she gave the whole class a D- or lower after she said that we would all be fine. Further, the feedback was so minimal I actually don’t know how to improve my score by at least 20% to pass. She gives no rubric and penalizes you for following instructions. I’ve never had a such an unreasonable Professor before. Like she is absolutely not taking into account the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic. Do not recommend
guys... listen to these reviews and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! There are a total of 17 essays, all of which are busywork yet incredibly time-consuming. The instructions for all of these essays are NEVER clarified. She contradicts herself all the time about what she is looking for in essays, and I have truly never had a professor grade/ assign work so unclearly.
This class is a waste of time. The professor is inconsiderate of her student's time and well-being and is disorganized to the point of it seriously impacting one's ability to be successful in this class. save yourselves!!
Professor Emigh is a very kind and sweet lady who has always responded to my emails within an hour or so. Saying that, however, I absolutely would not recommend taking her 123 class. There are weekly homework assignments graded on completion and 4 essays. Our class turned our first essay, and every single student (I quite literally mean every student) received an F on the assignment. The Professor was unwilling to take the incredibly serious concerns from students into consideration and we are all now certain that we will fail this class. I received an F on this assignment, and I am a straight A student who is minoring in English, so I know for a fact that our papers were not graded fairly (if at all looked at).
This class was absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure there will be plenty of reviews from my peers this quarter but it was my hardest class. I took four upper-division classes that were all ranked relatively similar in difficulty and I expected this one to be the easiest. I took this class solely for extra units in my major, but I do not recommend anyone to take this class. Perhaps Professor Emigh ran things differently pre-Covid, but this quarter was focused primarily on writing essays. She gave the majority of the class between a 7-15% on the first essay. She and the TAs seemed to have little communication with one another as often provided contradictory instruction. I sat in with her to go over my essay that I received a 12% on and she told me it was great. This was only one example of the headaches I experienced during her class. She also didn't care how you interpreted her lectures, she only wanted you to rewrite her lecture material in an essay format. To put it simply, do not take this class!
The grades posted on Bruinwalk are not accurate, do yourself a favor and save yourself the torture of this class.
The Professor and TA's give absolutely zero instruction/rubric/guidelines for the required SEVENTEEN (yes, 17) essays. She expects students to regurgitate exactly what she says in her dragged out lectures (she refuses to post the slides) and if you deviate from that info at all, you WILL fail. She gave the overwhelming majority of students an F on the first essay but when we went to office hours to talk about them, she said they were great... We reached out to the department head so many times and sat on a Zoom meeting for 2 hours, but they said that nothing could be done.
The Professor posts final grades minutes before the deadline, so students have no time or option to email about clarifying final grades or boosting if you're .1% out. I have genuinely never experienced such a high level of stress in my entire life and I wouldn't wish the complete mental exhaustion on anyone, please trust us on these reviews...
