Professor Dale is my absolute favorite professor at Ucla, and basically ever.
The guy is SO funny, super caring, and has really interesting lectures.
This class consisted of online quizzes (he uses tons of online quiz questions on the midterm and final, yay free points), 2 labs that are super straight forward and take an hour at most, a final paper (1 page) on a topic that you found interesting, along with a midterm and a final. While it sounds like a lot, it's completely doable and everything was super interesting to learn.
I went to his office hours on a few different occasions and just think he is the nicest, coolest, and most grounded professor here. When I was lost on a final paper topic, he took the time to send me SO many links of useful information to help me get started. He truly cares about his students.
Midterm and final both have studies guides that are clear. I got A's on both midterm and final and felt completely prepared off the study guides alone.
Prof. Dale is quirky and hilarious, always making jokes about interpersonal dynamics or about himself. I will be taking him again next quarter. Highly recommend!
THE BEST ! Take as many classes with Rick as you possibly can, even if you're not interested in the subject. His lectures are engaging, and he's really passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Plus he really wants his students to succeed and understand the material. The class is extremely easy, but I still feel like I learned a lot.
Also he is Canadian so 1) he is extremely polite and literally told us he's sorry he had to give us a final and 2) he has an accent when he says the word "sorry."

Rick Dale is by far the most amazing professor in the Communication department. He is organized, understanding, fair, funny, and overall a GEM! I cannot recommend him enough. If you work hard you will get an A+. His quizzes prepare you for the exams and the final paper is so broad it allows you to write about what interests you. He focuses on practicality and he learns every single students name. He often lefts us out of class early and he is so approachable and knowledgable. If you have the chance to take Rick, DO IT! You will not regret it. He deserves a million awards. No textbook so everything is online for free and there is reading, but 100% manageable. He also has the best slides and is always a quick email away!
KING! The people have spoken and they did not lie. Rick is caring, hilarious, and an overall amazing professor. He really goes above and beyond for his students! If you demonstrate an interest in a topic touched on in class and would like to know more about it, he'll personally curate a list of resources for you. Lectures were always animated, tests were fair, and assignments were very useful.
Rick is a great guy and a very chill professor. He really cares about student learning and will answer any questions you have about course material, grad school or pretty much anything else. He also made an effort to learn everyone's names which was nice since there's no discussion section/TAs. He prioritizes students actually understanding the material over making the class difficult, so if you go to lecture, skim the readings and pay any attention at all it is not hard to do well in this class. There's a midterm, weekly quizzes (open book, usually very straight forward), two simple labs that you do at home, a short paper and a final. It sounds like a lot, but it's very doable and well spaced out. There's no book and the readings are usually short and he doesn't assign very many. Highly recommend this class or any other classes taught by this professor!
Professor Dale is an amazing professor! pretty straight forward teaching technique, clarifies where he needs to, gives helpful study guides for midterms and exams and tries his best to make course material engaging knowing well enough that the material can be quite a drag. He really does strive for student success and although it may seem like a lot of work at first glance, the assigned materials and homework help in studying for the midterm and final exam. One thing to take note of is that he really does know every one of his students by their first names so if you're not putting in the work, he'll know!
Professor Dale is easily one of the best professors in the COMM department- take him if you have the chance! Like the other person said, the class is called actually Science of Language, basically you're studying a lot of different aspects of language (processing, language use, tools for language analysis, etc.). He constantly relates the material to how you can apply it for your career (mass media, entertainment, research, etc.), so it never feels like you're learning something that you'll never use. No exams, just short online quizzes most weeks (if you go to lecture and pay attention/take some notes they should be pretty easy), two labs and a final project (basically you just expand on a lab or use one or more of the language tools to create a bigger study). For the final project, he tells you to make it based on an industry/topic/etc. you're interested in so that you can use it for a career, grad school, etc. portfolio, so it's definitely to your benefit to put a lot of effort into it. He genuinely wants everyone to do well in his class and after graduating, I really can't recommend him enough!
This class is mislabed, it is actually called: Science of Language.
This class is awesome, it consists of weekly quizzes, 2 labs, and a final project.
Professor Dale is probably the only good comm professor at UCLA. He is hilarious, kind, very helpful, quick at emails, and always wanting to see his students succeed. This is my third class with him. Take him, you will not regret it.
I really can’t say enough good things about Professor Dale. He was so kind, and so understanding about taking the class online during COVID-19 and made every effort possible to reduce our stress. The class consisted of online quizzes which he took the best 5 out of 7, one lab (he reduced the requirement from 2) and a final project. He ultimately made the final project optional because of the current situation with the protests, but it was just an extension of one of the labs and he was super flexible about the topic we chose because he really wanted us to pick a topic that was relevant to us and our career interests. His lectures were pretty engaging even for someone like me who isn’t super into this area of comm, and he recorded them in advance so we could watch them on our own time. I would highly recommended taking a class with Dale if you can, he’s probably the best professor I’ve had at UCLA.
