Fall 2018 - I really enjoyed taking this class. I know Gurval isn't teaching it again, but wanted to leave him a positive review anyways! He is an incredibly passionate professor and is genuinely interested in everything he talks about. I would definitely take this class again, even though I usually hate group projects and presentations! Highly recommend taking a small class with Gurval, it's such a different experience than all other classes at UCLA.

Winter 2022 - The seminar I took was called UCLA Architecture and History of Westwood. If Professor Gurval ever leads this fiat lux again in the future TAKE IT!!!! The seminar consists of weekly one hour walking tours of campus and you learn about different architecture on campus and about the history of the campus. The first 5 weeks consisted of walking tours led by the professor but starting in week 6, the tours began to be led by students in groups of 1 or 2. In order to pass you need to attend all meetings (i believe you can skip 1 if you have a valid reason), lead 1 tour on a building or campus site of your choice (maximum 20 minutes), and submit an outline and a 10 slide powerpoint about your presentation. Overall this fiat lux was very interesting and super manageable and chill. I would take this fiat lux again in a heartbeat if i could.

Gurval is an extremely good lecturer that put me to sleep, but I think it was just me because everyone else stayed awake. The lectures that I did manage to make it through, information was organized, precise, and understandable. The only reason I did mediocre in the class was because of my TA - Palaskas; if you get her, transfer out because she grades everything insanely hard because she's just so into the class herself. Just do the readings and memorize the reader and you'll get an A.
