Winter 2022 - Professor Gurval is great and extremely knowledgeable about his subject. The class is not focused on history so much as it is very heavy on interpretation of what biographers thought and how they viewed their subjects, reminiscent of an English course. The course was interesting, but towards the end of the course the assignments sort of stacked up so that we had two papers due within a week of the final. The professor also continued to grade me down when he didn't agree with an argument I made and even when I applied his advice and criticisms to my essays. The midterm and final were a lot of work in which you have to write 4 essays about different biographers and their work. Other than this, the course was very interesting.

The readings for the course are very interesting and at times funny. Professor Gurval is very accessible and very concern for student learning. He will take the time to proofread your paper and provide much needed feedback. The lectures cover the various readings for that week, providing context and vital information that will be on the exams. The usage of power point and lecture notes is also a plus. The class is based on a short article report, midterm, final and a 12-page research paper. The best advice is to review the lecture notes and attend class, where he will summarize the main points for the readings. Professor Gurval does expect students to do the readings as well as providing detailed information on the exam questions with all the relevant information provided on the lecture notes. Final grade in the course: A
