Took both 10A and 101 with him. In all honesty, he is a very nice guy and cares a lot about his students, however he is a very poor professor. He spends close to 30-40 minutes on a slide and goes off on tangents about how his life and experiences relates to the material. Would not be a bad thing if he kept it brief but when youre trying to learn it can be annoying. Grading honestly depends on your TA. It can be really easy to get an A or really tough.

Some advice: Do NOT take Angelica Becerra as your TA for any Chicana/o Studies class if you want an A or want to truly learn something. She spends the entire discussion time trying to agitate the class, brag about her knowledge, or make students feel stupid for thinking a certain way. She also tries to be helpful but comes off condescending. Pick your TAs wisely.

I enjoyed this class so much! Professor is a great guy and is always down for his students' success. Its also a great introduction to Chican@ studies. Take this class!

class is an easy A. please dont buy the books, depending on your TA, they can be super unnecessary...i never opened mine since evrything you needed was given in the in class powerpoints. this is the only thing i disliked about this class, i paid so much for so many books i never opened. other than that, class was super easy, lectures were a bit long somethimes, but i liked professor Romero, hes a pretty chill professor, easy class.

Romero is a great guy but not a very interesting lecturer. He pretty much just reads off the slides and gives some background but isn't very engaging at all. I went to class every day but you definitely don't need to to get an A since this is literally one of the easiest classes UCLA offers. It's about Chicano Social Identity all that its made up of which could be very interesting if presented right but the content ended up being pretty dull and basically just outlined the history of Chicano injustices and the rise of the Chicano Movement. On the bright side, our midterm was an essay on a movie we watched in class with J Lo in it and the final was a 6 page paper that I wrote the day it was due and still got an A on. He never tests you on the readings but my TA had us do online discussion posts of the readings every week. We also did one group powerpoint on the readings for one week. Overall the class was pretty boring but I actually got a lot out of the discussion sections because I do not come from a Chicano background and it was really interesting to hear what people of a Chicano background and different races had to say and what they had experienced. I would recommend it as a super easy GE but you're not really going to gain much out of the class overall.

Professor Romero is such a great guy! With that being said though, his lectures do tend to be dry, especially since this class is two hours long. Most of the time he just reads off the slides. Dont need to buy the books! the lectures are basically a summary of the assigned readings. Midterm was an in class essay on a movie, very easy, we had a family oral history project, and a presentation on a reading to be presented in your discussion section. Final was a very straightforward paper that basically summarizes your take on the course. Extremely light work load, material is somewhat interesting, overall a very easy A, would definitely recommend.

This class is awfully boring, but super easy. I stopped going to lecture once he announced the midterm was on a movie we already watched. A lot of people sleep in the class. The material isn't tailored to be entertaining. He just reads off the slides. He's a nice guy though! The class really doesn't require much. I mean, discussion is presenting the readings to your classmates once and then the rest of the time you're watching other groups go. You do not need to buy the textbooks since they're all online, I believe. Just need the readings for your discussion presentations. Literally the only time you need the readings is for your final essay and even then you can borrow someone else's. Boring class, but an easy class.

If you're looking for an easy A, this is the class to take. It's very clear that Romero is passionate about Chicano studies, but I took the class as an easy GE. The midterm was on a movie that we watched in class but I didn't see, and I got a 98% on it, and the final was a super easy take-home essay. There was also a small project which was also super easy. I often didn't go to class and would just have my friends send me the slides and I didn't buy a single book for the class.

Really pointless class.
The lecture is completely useless so you can not to go lecture at all.
I didn't learn anything from the class. The professor keeps on trying to appeal to students' emotion on how Mexicans went through struggle, but personally not being Mexican, couldn't really agree or anything. Throughout the quarter, most I have learned is how strong of a victim mentality the professor has.
Grading is whatever. Midterm is easy, and the final is a paper that depends 100% on TA, not the professor.

Overall, would recommend if you are Hispanic/Mexican but not really for other race

Professor Romero really knows his stuff and you can tell he's passionate about the Chicano movement. The class was so boring though. Tbh it's an easy A. Like, you literally don't have to do anything really. All of your grading is from your TA.

Lectures are 100% pointless. I went to all of them and you don't have to go to any really. He puts a lot of his slides online, and if you know someone that went to the lectures, they'll just give you the notes.

The readings are pretty pointless too. After like week 6 I didn't even bother to read them. The readings assigned are the same as his lectures, and you talk about the readings in your discussion section. So you basically review the readings two times anyway.

This class is an easy A. If anyone fails it I would think they were not going to discussion sections. That's where you pretty much learn everything.

Perfect beginning to my college career – the TA's and the professor love their work, are dedicated to the students, and the material truly opened up my mind to social issues in the Chican@ community and beyond. I'll never forget; I was walking into lecture 15 minutes late up the stairs of Broad, I look to my left, and lo and behold Professor Chao Romero is walking right there next to me modestly donned in sneakers. What does he say? "Thank you for taking the class." Go to him, feel free to talk about anything on your mind. The man has a JD from Cal, a PhD from here, and much more advocacy experience than I can ever hope to have.

Lecture slides are posted. Flexible GE requirement that can satisfy any Arts and Humanities GE (yup, even Performing/Visual Arts requirement). Grade basically solely based on midterm (announced prompt, had to do with a movie we watched), final paper (announced in advance), and a small paper about your family background/social identity. A+.

Shoutout to Rosanna "Rose" Simons for being an amazing, understanding, dope TA. Hope she's still there. TAKE THIS CLASS!
