this course is pretty much discrete math at a very basic level but from a linguistic/rhetorical perspective so take it if you like that and don't take it if you don't. concepts felt pretty straightforward. homework is due through a dated-looking application called "logic" but the problems are very targeted (not too repetitive except at beginning) and helpful so it's clear that prof has taught this course a fair amount of times
s levy is a very kind, affable, and humorous person and you can tell he wants to help everyone do well despite the large amount of students in class (over 300). trust him and pls laugh at his frequent jokes
Do not trust the grade distributions for this class. A huge number of drops and a ton of P/NP makes the above distributions possible.
Levy is a nice enough guy, but this class goes wayyyyy too in depth to be a GE. I'm not sure if its Levy's doing or the class itself (somehow, I think its the former).
It's absurd to expect students to attend weekend office hours (with tutors, not Levy himself) if they want to learn the content.
The only C I've ever gotten on a test were on Levys exams. I improved on subsequent exams, but Levy was super unclear about his grading practices (based on a mysterious and subjective curve where exam weights would change) so I (like seemingly 50% of the class) chose to take it P/NP.
I'd highly recommend avoid this class. Even if you do well, the time it takes to succeed to learn something that you can easily, easily get away without knowing at all (whether you're a philosophy major or pre law, there are plenty of other classes/ways to prep) is absurd. The grade distribution is a mirage. Trust me don't take it.
Lot of disgruntled people talking about how hard the class is. Logic isn't for everybody, but Steve Levy is. He's experienced, helpful, accommodating, and he wholeheartedly believes in your ability to grasp the concepts and will help you get there.
The two other reviewers for this quarter are pathetic. If you are serious about academics, then regardless of protests or pandemic, you would have been enthusiastic about this time-tested class.
Indeed, there were some mishaps with the exams, but overall, I would 100% recommend this course to anyone interested in logic, philosophy, or law school.
Levy is a merciless pedant, who never let up on his holier than thou logician B.S. even during a Wed./Fri. 8:00 AM class.
Don't take him, as he gives pop-quizes at the start of his 8:00 AM classes, even though he KNOWS that his students have other classes/obligations, and he should just be respectful of the fact that students attend at all.
I hate this man personally, for damaging my GPA (which was over 3.7 before I was subjected to his merciless, relentlessly boring Bullshit). I am NOT a bad student, this man is just a cruelly boring bastard, and a horrible Prof. that no one should ever take.
Any other class, any other instructor besides this guy!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Levy is funny on lectures and on emails about midterms and finals! The content of this class, midterms and final are easy and it's like you're playing games for both homework and exams.
Almost everyone get full scores on homework.
I got 94, 98 and 200 for exams.
8 a.m. class. That alone should have scared me away from this class, but I thought I could handle it. I was wrong. This class sucked, for me. It's nothing what I expected it to be. I love philosophy, but this is not you're conventional philosophy. You just taking a crazy sentence and trying to make it into a symbol. Doesn't make sense, I know. Here is an example. If it is not the case that If Richard won't Terry will, Kit won't. This magically means, (~(~R->T)->~X). SEE! Stupid! It turns out to be basically math. I will say that I was a bad student though, and fell behind. I missed a few lectures, and that screwed me. Since it is a lot like math, you can't afford to fall behind, and I fell behind. As a final warning, do not think I am stupid! I got a 4.0 last quarter, but if you suck at math, and are not a morning person, do not take this class.
I just realized I evaluated the class, and not the professor, Levy is real cool. Funny too. But I had to drop the class, so this is sort of a conflicting statement.
GREAT CLASS. Professor Levy is such a cool old man and he's passionate about philosophy. This class isn't what I expected it to be. I had no background in Philosophy but did well. It requires a Free Software and the homework and tests are done on a a computer. Practice is extremely important to do well on the tests. He has like 8 tutors that are always available so its nearly impossible to do bad on the homework assignments that are due before every class. The homework isn't that bad and you go over similar problems in class. Midterms and Finals are open book and open note so a quick tip would be to print out similar problems (especially those on the practice tests) and use those as a guide for the actual tests. With this, you should be good to go. Not an easy A, but definitely a possible one.
This is a must-take class. Really cool and sweet professor. His jokes are hit-or-miss, but because of his quirkiness, they always get a laugh. Has multiple tutoring sessions to help with the HW which is due before every class. Going to class is key because you can get left behind really fast if you aren't keeping up with the material. Aside from that, as long as you stay on top of it, it's an easy A.
