I had the misfortune of taking Ozler for Econ 121 in the Fall.

First off, it's not so much that Ozler is a difficult professor (I ended up getting an A in the course), but just that she is unquestionably the worst professor in the Econ department in terms of quality. Her lectures consist of her reading off chapter slides and relevant chapter questions at a rapid pace. By the end of the quarter, students end up being responsible for nearly 500 pages of reading material. As mentioned before, she is absolutely useless without a laptop. One time, her laptop was not working for the slides and instead of improvising like any normal professor would and working on the chalkboard, she decided to leave the classroom for the next 30 minutes and search for a laptop so she could read us the slides. And who could forget the three times she cancelled class last minute, which judging from previous posts is actually not uncommon. For example, in our final class, where she promised to do a final review with us, she never shows up to class. Two days later, she emails us saying the reason she didn't show up is because her garage door was not opening.

So, all mediocrity aside, how do you do well in this class? For Econ 121, find as many past tests as you can get your hands on. I kid you not, she reposts the same questions over and over again on every exam (truly signs of a lazy professor). If you are able to memorize these exams, you are guaranteed at least an A-. If you cannot get your hands on as many exams as you can, you literally need to memorize every line of the book she covers and every answer to questions she covers in class. So, if you are good at memorizing, this is the class for you. Otherwise, do not expect to get any true learning value from this course. This class is a joke and she is a joke.

Professor Ozler is truly the most pathetic Professor I have ever had at UCLA. She lectures by resting her forearms on her computer, and reads directly from powerpoint slides that are distributed by the textbook company. She is incompetent and it is sad to see that a school such as UCLA has kept her employed. Also, I did well in the class, so I am not writing this review out of spite for a bad grade. Avoid her. She blows

I took econ 121 winter quarter.
I liked her class very much even though some students complain about her teaching style. Her tests directly comes from her slices and materials are not that difficult for me .
Since this is my second time taking Econ 121 , I studied a lot to prepare her tests. I strewed up my midterm due to illness right before the midterm, but I submit the docters note which verify that I was not on the good condition to take a exam. Professor generously weight my final more.
She cares about her students. Ask questions and read her slices you will be okay in her class.

This quarter I took Econ 121 and Econ 107 with Professor Ozler. I have to say she is really concerned about students, dedicated to class and always prepared. She would go over questions from chapters in class and always patient in analyzing arguments step by step. She gives us practice exams and questions under each section she assigned which are great reviews for final. And I really like the way how grade is composed, 40 % of middle and 60% of final which means we don't have homework and class load is appropriate. Overall, I am really glad to have her as my professor during my year at UCLA and I wish all the students who split venom towards her could be more objective.

I would have to disagree with most of the comments about Professor Ozler not caring for her students. I am a graduating senior and I have not yet met a professor like her who is actually willing to take advice from her own students. She is extremely nice and always available with emails. She cancelled class? Big deal!!!! She had a medical emergency , cmon guys, I think we can fit in her shoes. I totally disagree with all the negative comments. I have personally been to her office hours many times and she has always greeted me with respect and kindness and helped me out with all of my questions. I will DEFINATELY take another class with this professor. She wants the students to do well in her class and she actually promotes participation, which I think is very helpful in class. People who are leaving negative comments are probably the ones who are doing bad in the class. Im not doing perfect in the class but I'm just being honest and saying that she is a great professor. The most caring professor in UCLA in my opinion.

I am shocked and despaired that UCLA retains such low quality professor. If you take away her laptop she won't be able to give a lecture. I am a graduating senior and this is the first time I have ever felt the need to speak out about how bad a professor is. No only did she cancelled classes unannounced, she apparently has no idea what she's talking about and every lecture is as if she's learning the material for the first time. I wish someone will do something because her prescence here is an insult to the econ department, the school, and the tuition we paid to be here.

My experience with Professor Ozler differs from all the negative ones below.

I personally found this class enriching and helpful towards applying my knowledge to international business. I highly recommend you take this course because Professor Ozler is a brilliant lecturer and caring because even when she was hospitalized, she was responsive to emails and sent updates on what we should know for the final.

If you pay attention in class, take notes and study the slides, there is no way you will do terrible. The class is composed of 3 tests- 2 midterms (25 &35% each) and final 40%.

This woman does not care about her students WHATSOEVER!she seems alright in the beginning when she is going over easy stuff but you will see by the end of the class that she really doesn't enjoy teaching. She is is also extremely RUDE in office hours and i'm pretty sure 99% of the people who went walked away frusterated because they did not get their questions answered. Here's the breakdown. 2 midterms, 1 final (25%/35%/40%). The format for the midterms are: 5-6 MC and 4 free open ended questions. The final is double that. As pretty much everyone says the mutiple choice kill you because not only are they worth 5 points each, but they are the type where there are multiple right answers to the question and if say you circle 2 out of the 3 correct answers you still get no points. I am an A econ stundet and I got a 58% and 59% on the two midterms even though I studied extremely hard for the exams. On the second exam I lost 25 points alone just on the MC. Also the multiple choice are the most obscure questions you could ever think of. For example, one of them was asking the percentage of non-service labor industry in the US, which the answer was located on a small pie graph on one of the lectures and i'm pretty sure she didn't even mention that slide. She asks the the most dumb, most random facts that you would never need for any econ class. Now onto the short answer questions. Yes they are very similar to the ones she uses on past exams, however usually there will be a small differentiation so you can't just blatently memorize it. Also, as the person below me said there are always 1-2 questions that you have never seen before. On one of the midterms she gave this ridiculous derivation question that no one in the class even bothered to study because it seemed trivial and the class is not about math or dereivations whatsoever so no one figured it would ever show up on the exam. Everyone that I talked to about that exam said they got 0/20 for that question. OVERALL: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO....or atleast not with her.

Prof. Ozler started using chalk and chalk board for Econ 121 during winter quarter 2012. If you enjoyed Sproul's Econ 1 and Econ 11 like I did, then you'll appreciate her method, since you can follow along with which lines goes first and what this intersection means before this line intersects this other line.

With that said, I found her class difficult and only ended up with a B+ (I got an A- in Sproul's Econ 1 and A in his Econ 11 class). I do not agree with an older review that if Econ is not your forte you will still be fine. It's just like that Hunger Games meme: May the Curve be ever in your favor. There are two midterms and one final, and really, how well you do kinda depends on how well everyone else does. I worked hard for the class and got all the past exams and did each at least two or three times.

I realized a bit late in the class that even if you memorize all the past exams and prep as hard as you can, on your part, you will still lose points because (1) the multiple choice are ruthless. 5 points each, usually 6 points, so that's 30 points right there. If you miss selecting one option, you get the entire 5 points off. And since everything is based on a curve, 5 points really makes or breaks your grade. (2) Past exams help you with the written questions: they are honestly copied and pasted on your exams. The catch is, every final has a new written problem you've never seen before, and although these tend to be problems she's done in class on the board, you will realize that it's simply just too much to try to memorize everything by finals time, when you are studying for your final. In aggregate, you are responsible for something close to 40 graphs/concepts that can be translated to graphs.
