My favorite class and professor that I have had at UCLA so far. Dr. Chichester is incredibly personable and approachable, and surprisingly managed to make an english class enjoyable for me. She has high expectations for essays, but gives great feedback that will improve your writing significantly. There is a decent workload -- weekly readings that you're expected to annotate, weekly journals, two essays, and some informal projects. Participation matters, but Dr. Chichester gives plenty of opportunities to contribute, while also making discussions fun, engaging, and comfortable. I recommend this course and professor strongly!
I've only been at ucla for two quarters so far, but this will probably always remain my favorite class I've taken. All EngComp3 classes have class themes, so Chichester's was about nature and personally I found it pretty interesting. It's English so obviously there's some writing for this class, but it really isn't too much to handle. She's not a super tough grader and she's very direct in letting you know exactly what she's looking for in your writing, so if you take her pointers you'll do just fine. This is a course where you have to show up to every class, but I enjoyed attending and never really found myself having the urge to pick up my phone out of boredom. You can tell she has a passion for the class and theme, and she's very approachable and is always happy to answer questions and offer extra help.
I DEFINITELY recommend her class !!!!!
Professor Chichester is super nice and funny! She explains all her assignments clearly and thoroughly. There are a lot of readings and the essays can be a lot of work. I'd say per week, if there wasn't a paper due I'd have about 3-4 hours of homework (reading/annotating) and I didn't even do super super close readings. She really loves if you volunteer your thoughts on the readings in class, and it's super easy to involve yourself. She is very open and welcoming. The papers seem daunting at first but I wrote them all either the day before or the day they were due. Comments from her are really helpful if you take all of them into consideration, your final draft will be much better!
Professor Chichester is one of the most caring and invested teachers I have ever had. Her syllabus is specific and clear on deadlines and format expectations. Her door is always welcome at office hours. She also gives feedback on each first draft helping you achieve a high grade on the final draft. There are many assignments to improve your grade; my year we had two, five page papers, a letter, a 1-page assignment, and journal entries. This class was challenging, but overall it truly improved my writing and made me excited for my next 4 years at UCLA!
Chichester is an overall great professor. Office hours tend to get busy, but she will do her best to help you out. Seeling environment course reader for her class. Contact me at marielf1212@gmail.com if interested!
Professor Chichester is one of the best professors at UCLA. She really cares about her students and provides useful suggestions in every paper feedback. I initially did not perform well in Paper 1, but she encouraged me a lot and finally, I went well in Paper 2, letter and one-pager. Easy A class. Go to her office hour frequently and learn what she wants for your paper, and you will be fine. Best experience, and great thanks to her.
Really enjoyed taking EC3 with Prof Chichester! The class focuses on texts relating to the environment, and there are 4 papers in total. You get a comment by the professor on 3 of them, and as long as you do what the professor tells you to change, you'll get a decent grade. She is very clear on what she expects on each of the paper, so it was not too difficult writing the papers.
