I loved Dr. Chichester's class! She is super engaging, understanding, and genuinely cares about her students. She sends a lot of emails outside of class time, but I didn't mind because they generally clarified information that I was confused about. What I thought was most incredible about Dr. Chichester was that she took the time to meet with each student for 20 minutes individually for each paper. With two lectures of 20 students, she wound up spending so much time with us, but it helped me succeed in the class for sure. The grading was 15% participation, 30% journal, 25% paper 1, 30% paper 2.

The participation was just based on attending and participating in class, which isn't hard with only 20 students and discussions that pretty much lasted all class. There was very little lecturing which I really liked!
The journal is a collection of in class responses (10 min in the beginning of class) and out of class responses (1/2 page) and author notes which were 5 bullet points for each author you read from (3-5 per class meeting)
Papers were very open for interpretation and there were many opportunities to conference with the professor!

Overall I loved this class and the topic of nature was so interesting!

Although I only got a B+, I do not think that Dr. Chichester is a bad teacher. I attribute my grade to my own struggles with writing essays (never been good at it). In my opinion, if you have a record of doing well in literary analysis courses, then this class should be an easy A for you. If not, it will be a lot harder, but anything lower than a B is still extremely unlikely.

Pretty easy GE class. Definitely an easy way to fulfill your writing requirement. Take Chichester!! She's such a sweetheart and genuinely wants you to do well.
Readings are so important!! It's so hard to bullshit the papers/discussions if you haven't done or even looked at the readings.

This class was very fun and I felt that I learned something useful. The workload is not super easy as it is a writing class and essays need to be written, but the essays for this class were not too long compared to the other classes offered, as they were only 3, 4, and 5 pages long. I would recommend this class. Participation is mandatory though.

I would say there's a pretty insane amount of readings and essays because it is a writing intensive AND english course. this is coming from a 3.84 Phy Sci major. you should reeeeally only take this class if you know you'll have a lot of downtime to really write some beautiful, not-BS essays. i seriously cannot emphasize that enough -- if you have sports, a job, standardized tests, thinking about taking 4 classes or 3 with at least 1 hard one, etc., then honestly this class might not be for you. HIGHLY recommend waiting for **STEINBERG** (idk how to spell it). i didn't find out about him until halfway into the quarter, but Steinberg now teaches English 5W.

Steinberg used to only teach English Comp 3; now he teaches 5W, so I highly recommend waiting for him. He gives out between 80% to 100% A's, excluding A-.

As for Chichester, you have to really put your time and soul into this. office hours are pretty necessary if you want at least an A-. besides the crazy amount of work, i thought the class was okay. we studied things like structuralism, functionalism, and the steps to doing a critical analysis -- must follow her rubric or you'll lose points. i found it interesting -- others did not.

Professor Chichester is probably one of the nicest professors at UCLA. For a Writing II class, her's was by far one of the easiest. While most Writing II classes have to write 5, 6, even 7+ page papers, our paper lengths were 3, 4, and 4.5 pages. We did little journal entries in class every day which counted for our participation grades. If you want to get an A in her class (you will probably get at least a B+ because she is so nice), go to her office hours! That's how she remembers you and she will literally tell you what she wants you to say in your papers. Aside from her really kind grading, Professor Chichester is an angel. I would absolutely recommend taking her class.

Professor Chichester is one of the best professors I have had at UCLA. She is so friendly and caring. She is very lenient. She grades very fairly and she gives many chances for you to do well in her class. I really enjoyed this class. WONDERFUL CLASS AND WONDERFUL PROFESSOR. Take this class with her, even if you do not like the subject for the class.

Professor Chichester is nothing short of amazing. She's one of the nicest and most genuine professors I have come across. I actually looked forward to waking up for her 8am every Tuesday and Thursday. She grades quite generously. You should have no problem getting the grade you want, so long as you go to her office hours for feedback.
