Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: B-
Dec. 24, 2019

This class truly stressed me out this quarter. I was able to pass all of my quizzes without reading because of common sense honestly. In total there was 6 essays and they were back to back at one point which was stressful as HELL. Ashton was my TA and he was honestly great and the reason I enjoyed the class. The books I wish I would have never bought because I never read from them. The TA's grade extremely hard in my opinion for no reason at all. You have to be on top of your work for this class. Definitely not an "easy" GE yet it is possible to do well. Attendance was also mandatory because of the pop quizzes. Would I take this class again? Absolutely not. She isn't a bad professor but the structure of the class is what is very aggravating. I definitely could have done better on my essays but with the workload from this class and others I did all that I had left in me.

Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A-
Dec. 23, 2019

This class has a pretty heavy workload. The class consists of five essays plus a short paper, five pop quizzes (with lowest quiz grade dropped), and participation. The essays were not too difficult to write--they were pretty straightforward. However, to do well in this class, it is important to spend a lot of time on these essays to get a good grade. Make sure to attend TA office hours and ask questions about the essay, which I found to be pretty helpful. The quizzes are very specific and very difficult and are based on the readings that you're given. This is not an easy A GE, but it is definitely possible to get an A if you work hard on essays, do the readings, participate, and attend office hours.

Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: B
Dec. 20, 2019

This class is heavy on assignments. To make things worse, those excessive readings are tested very specifically in pop-quizzes. These are basically the two complaints I have regarding this class. First, reading materials are way too many than acceptable, and many of them are redundant. For example, when we are talking about race, we are assigned over 4 passages to address the police brutality while all of them are essentially delivering the same message. 1 or 2 would suffice. But no, we have to read all of them, because maybe two or three questions in the pop quiz would addressed them. Also, the pop quizzes are too specific on materials that it seems really petty to design them this way. Overall, I enjoy the material, but I would not recommend Prof. Anderson despite her being a engaging lecturer.

This is my favorite class that I have taken at UCLA thus far. Professor Anderson is always very engaging and genuinely wants her students to learn and be active global citizens. Every lecture was inspiring and convinced me to look at the world in a different way. I originally took this class as just a GE, but am now considering adding sociology as another major because of how amazing of a professor she is.

Her class had no final and instead was 5 papers and 5 pop quizzes. If you are a strong writer/prefer writing to tests, then this is definitely a good class for you. Along with every paper, there is a rubic that tells you exactly how the paper will be graded. The quizzes seem very specific, but if you do the reading, they're pretty manageable. Plus, she drops the worst score. Every lecture is posted online so that you can go back and refer to the slides after class.

On top of Anderson being an amazing professor, my TA Alex was also amazing and really added more meaning to the class. She would hold discussions that further discussed the material we learned and would help us with all of our papers. She was very assessable during her office hours and was easy to talk to.

Overall, I would highly recommend this class, especially if you enjoy seeing and understanding the world in new and different ways.

This class is a lot of work but if you keep up with readings and ask questions in discussion you will be fine! I'm a junior and still pull from/remember material from this class for other comm major courses.

This class is NOT easy. My grade actually really surprised me. I think my TA was just nice, because I didn't participate during discussions (I was always lost), and participation is a reasonable chunk of your grade. The pop quizzes really sucked. Classes were boring, but there were admittedly a few interesting topics. The workload was really heavy: lots of readings, lots of writing. I wouldn't say that this class should be your first choice, but if you find yourself doing it, it shouldn't be that bad.

If you're looking for an easy GE, don't take this class!!! it was a ridiculous amount of reading- sometimes 200 pages assigned on Tuesday due Thursday. To make it work, her pop quizzes are extremely specific and even if you do read you will still probably fail them. Her lectures are the same as the reading, so it's pretty boring listening to the information you just killed yourself reading. The essay topics are very difficult and, depending on the TA, hard to do well on. The material was arguably interesting, but ruined by the stress of reading and pop quizzes.
