I didn't like this class too much... I took this class while considering being a Sociology major, and taking this class proved to me that I DON'T want to major in it. The field makes you skeptical about the world you live in, and I'm pretty satisfied with the world I live in. That's when I realized sociology isn't my thing.
The concepts are fairly easy to follow, but her lectures put you to sleep. They consist of her mainly reiterating the readings that had to be done before the lecture. There are lotttts of readings for this class. We had weekly journals where you had to cite the readings (pretty easy though), and two essays. The second essay was really bad. We had to make up our own thesis while incorporating 4 random topics.
The class itself was pretty easy, and the professor was pretty nice and sweet, but I think she could have made it much more interesting.
Dr. Anderson is an awesome professor. She assigns a lot of reading, but in all honesty you don't need to do any of it. She highlights good readings to look at in lecture and you can pretty much use that in your papers making the class that much easier. She also has no midterms or finals which basically means you don't need to read. I will admit that there were a lot of papers, but most of it you can write in about an hour or two. The only real papers that take longer are the essay and final research paper. With that being said, TA's grade the papers really easy, so you really can't get lower than an A- if you put all the effort in to complete everything on time. In terms of the course material, it is very interesting and you really won't feel like your wasting your time if you go in with an open mind. She's a really nice person and cares a lot about teaching which is kind of rare with faculty at UCLA. I definitely felt that my time in class was worthwhile and being a South campus major her class was definitely perfect for a guy that hates reading and can't write extremely well. I strongly advise you to take it if you can get in, and even if you can't a lot of people drop on day 1 because she assigns a small easy paper that is due on day 2 (2 days later). Basically, if you actually do that paper and 2 of the other 5 for the quarter, you can basically write exactly what is in one of the readings and it will save you lots of time. All in all, take her!
I thought that the subject matter that we discussed in class was very interesting, not exactly what I was looking for, but nonetheless interesting. We also watched a couple movies, one (La Haine) that I absolutely loved (A Short Film About Killing was pretty good as well). I will tell you though that this class was definitely not a super easy one. I ended up with an A but you are required to write 1-2 pages a week, and have 5 papers including a research project that was 20-something pages long for me (this included interview transcripts). Also, the course reader is expensive (I'd recommend getting it used and sharing it) but necessary for your papers. Prof. Anderson was a nice person in lecture and office hours, and really interesting as well, but I felt she was a little too strict about logistics and such... for TA's, Sarah was really cool, I'd recommend her for sure. Overall, I think this class was incredibly interesting, but you should be prepared to do a good amount of work if you take it.
So she gives alot of work and readings, but you have to take this class. I am not big on reading or writing, but this class is definitely worth it. There are 1-2page journals due every week, along with 5 other essays. I loved this class because it gave me a different perspective of life. There are no test because she does not believe in them. So you pretty much have just have to write in read. I like Terri because she is passionate about this class. Take this class if you can with Terri.
I am completely baffled by these reviews. Terri Anderson is by far one of the best, most interesting professors I've ever had, and I've been in college now for seven years. This class didn't even count toward my GEs or other requirements, but someone told me I had to take her while I was at UCLA. And I'm so glad I did. I can honestly say that since taking this class, my whole perspective has changed. I realize that there are a lot of young people who don't take anything away from the class because they're apathetic and too busy texting and thinking about frat parties, but if you have more than half a brain you will learn so much from her. The Soc 1 class is a lot of work (journals every week, a 5-6 page essay, three 3-page experiments, and a 7-8 page research paper), so it's not for slackers..But honestly, if you want to gain anything from your education, or get a glimpse at how the world really works, you MUST take a class with her! If you go with an open mind, it will change your life.
I could not stand her lecturing skills. She constantly had discussions with the entire lecture hall (200+ students) about how we "feel" or what we "thought" of the material. She wasted at least 20-30 mins of class time each lecture listening to the same group of 10 students feel self important. Then we people like myself would walk out of class early because it was pointless she would take role right after we left. Her lecture was pointless - we were never graded on ANYTHING she presented in class except for the films we watched - which were rather obsucure and you need to go to class to watch them. Other than that I skimmed the articles before i wrote the papers and got an A- in the class. However, the TA Lucas Moreland was super chill and generally just stared at us in discussion then let us out early.
FYI WAIT LISTERS--shes a major bitch about this and refused outright to even address the subject until 3rd week, so she basically just wants u to do all the work and watch u squirm. yes in the end she let everyone that was still there in butt i wouldnt put it past her to never add u if there was a lot of people. overall some of the readings are actually quite good. butt 2/3 is not needed to get an A, just buy one and share it with someone, way cheaper, you do need access to it on a occasion so this would be your best option. she assigns some "experiments" which yes are nuts, but not hard just ridiculous. rather annoying, butt definitely doable. ta grades all those and the papers (no tests) so its really up to them. i wrote each essay the day of the class (started at 4) and put in very minor effort and got an A- definitely possible to get the A and by no means a painful class. going to class is not essential butt definitely in ur best interest.
I couldn't agree more with what everyone else had to say about Professor Anderson...the very first day of class, I thought she was a robot and it really took a while to get used to her style...the classes were really boring at times and I often found myself asking "why in the world am I here..?"...Doing all the readings is a complete waste of time...the best use for them would be as treatment for insomnia. The $120-priced course reader is tough to swallow, especially since its mostly filled with nonsensical rubbish, but all you have to do is read a few important ones and you'll make it...honestly, this class is really easy in terms of grading but the work is time consuming...you'll get the grade that you're looking for if u put enough time...my best advice would be: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME DOING READINGS...THEY ARE A WASTE...PICK THE IMPORTANT ONES AND WRITE EVERYTHING BASED OFF OF THOSE
