Took GEOG 5 with Professor Gillespie and it was both fun and educational. Overall, i really enjoyed the class, he touched upon a lot of interesting environmental issue and we also got to explore nature (mini fieldtrips) in the labs.
With regard to his grading scheme, 30% midterm, 40% final and 30% lab (30% of which is attributed to the final project). I thought that the class was pretty straight forward but go to EVERY lecture. For the most part, he will test you on the lecture material as oppose to the book (which can be dense and time consuming to read). He also gives out a really comprehensive study guide which tell you everything you need to know for the midterm and final. However, it is quite a lot of memorization (facts, figures etc), i had about 25 pages of note for midterm and 40 for the final. Be sure to go to his office hours as he is very helpful and it really makes the exams a lot easier because he will emphasize on what he is focusing on in the exams.
I thought this was a really fun and educational class. Definitely worth taking and very straight forward.
I have taken geog 5, 111, 113 with Prof. G. and he is a G. I love him. Not only are his courses straight to the point and easy, but genuinely interesting. He is so passionate about the subject you cant help but become enthralled with his lectures.
His lectures are funny, and he hands out study guides exactly like his tests.
Really easy and enjoyable class. You don't have to do the readings. He gives you a study guide for both exams that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. He's also really entertaining in lecture. The labs are pointless but easy.
If you want an easy GE or pre-req with minimal work, where you actually learn something useful, take this class! Professor Gillespie's lectures are entertaining and the information is actually interesting. There is one project in the class that isn't hard at all.
Geography 5 was a really fun class. I took it fall of 2013 and enjoyed it immensely. The labs were fun - we got to get out in nature. I still find myself identifying different types of plants and "letting the trees talk to me."
He sometimes tries too hard to be "the cool guy," but it's kind of refreshing because he's actually really funny. I found myself busting up laughing in class.
I went to lecture, didn't read the book, but studied moderately and got an A on the midterm and final.
The group blog project was really easy in my opinion.
Geog 5 was easy, but I learned so much from it too. It was overall enjoyable.
Plus, Professor Gillespie found my Bruincard and personally picked it up and emailed me and handed it to me. I thought that was nice, he cares about his students!
