I took Physics 5B with Professor Carter during COVID-19 and he is amazing! One of the best professors I have ever had at UCLA. He teachers the subject very well and clearly, he goes out of his way to make students comfortable to speak up and ask questions whenever they have any ambiguity. He will even ask certain students if they have questions when he sees confusion on his face. In addition, I have grown to like when he sends us out to breakout rooms to discuss the ConceptTest questions, which was pretty successful in my opinion. I really enjoyed the structure and organization of his class. I regret that I did not attend more office hours and get to know him better. He is also really empathetic towards students situations, and also takes the blame when appropriate. For example, he made the first test too long and gave everyone an additional 15 points because he felt bad that he made it too long. That is a really nice thing to do and most professors will not admit when they are wrong or made a mistake. Professor Carter is not only a good teacher, but a very honest man, and great person in general. I highly recommend him to other students. We have 5 quizzes biweekly and a final project. Everything else is free points.

His teaching styles is awesome. You do practice problems during the lectures. On the midterms and finals, he gives concept questions on stuff he mentioned in the lectures so make sure you go to them.
He also post derivations in videos and post them opn YouTube. YouTube videos are not necessary (because he knows some people won't watch them anyways) but recommend.

Carter is an excellent professor who really knows how to teach the material and engages the student. His grading scheme is very fair and might be actually a little too easy. I'm not sure how I managed a C in his 1B class since I got 40% on the final. DO take this professor because he is great and is very lenient with grades in the end. If you score at the average you will likely get a B

Professor Carter is really good at getting the concepts across. Sure, lectures are not friendly for those who want to take notes, but when you take notes, it is harder to concentrate on the material you are taking notes on anyway, so it is just a matter of lecturing style, you get more out of the lecture that way.

I really really liked Professor Carter. He is, and perhaps will be for a long time the best physics teacher/professor I have ever had. He doesn't bombard you with questions and formulas, but instead makes sure you understand the underlying concepts with concept tests (he puts up a question with 1-8 answers, and you hold up number cards). They are so useful and really make memorizing formulas irrelevant.

His midterms weren't too bad, and the class in general is great because he always brings in demonstrations on the relevant material. Very passionate about what he teaches.

Overall, I give Professor Carter an A+!

One of the most innovative teachers I've seen. His lectures are not organized in the traditional old-school physics style of spending 50 minutes doing nothing but derivations. His demos, ConcepTests, and examples give you a solid understanding of how to approach problems intuitively, and you will pick up the formulas naturally along the way.

Overall, amazing professor. I wish he could teach all of my physics classes for the next three years.

i didn't do too well in his class, but it's because i never go to the lecture (i'm lazy like that). In my opinion, his lecture aren't organized and it makes you not want to take notes in class. His exams are pretty easy though. I crammed everything in two days for the final and pulled a B, but since i didn't do too well on the midterms.. i got a bad grade. So what i'm trying to say is, if you study hard, go to office hours, take all the quizzes (and do well on it) and do homework, there's a high chane you might get an A in this class :)

Professor Carter was awsome! He is by far one of the best professors I've taken. He clearly explained concepts, step by step, ensuring that the students understood what was going on.

Lecture details: He hands out flash cards to all the students, because he does concept tests where he posts a question on the overhead and you hold up your answer. These tests are in no way counted toward your grade. These are just to see if a majority or a minority of the class understands the concept he's trying to convey. He does really exciting and fun demonstrations in class. He even cooked a hot dog using it as a resistor in one of the demonstrations, and one of the students actually ate it...eeww.

Midterms: His first midterm was weighted on the more difficult side, but graded fairly. His exams are heavily weighted on concepts so study these most. The second midterm was a bit easier due to easier material, once again heavily weighted on concepts. The final exam was hard but definately do-able. He focus'es mainly on concepts as opposed to the mathematics, because what he wants you to get from the class is to be able to understand how and why it works as opposed to just being able to solve a problem. He allows one 3x5 index card with equations on it for each midterm and three for the final.

Online reading quizes: He started out where we did these online reading quizes twice a week, Monday and Thursday by 10:00pm, but then realized it was a bit much. So he changed it to Sunday by 10pm which made time management soooooo much easier. These are counted towards your grade but not by much, once again these quizes are for him to see how the students are grasping the concepts from the reading material. At the end of the quiz there is a slot so that you can write in the parts of the chapter that were confusing to you so that he can expand on them in lecture.

Availability: Professor Carter always had an open door and was always willing to help, regardless of time or as an unscheduled office hour. He is an extremely nice guy and very friendly which makes him approachable.

TA: Brian eh......not so good, I went to see a tutor because he didn't seem to care to much about helping out, it always seemed like he couldn't wait until his office hours and discussion were over like he didn't want to be there.

Overall: Professor Carter is a great proffessor he obviously cares about the students, which is rare in classes of this size. He had to put a lot of work himself with all the reading he had to do with our discussion board and the online reading quizes so that he was prepared to teach. All in all, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND him for Physics.

Professor Carter is one of the few knowledgeable teachers who actually knows how to teach. He likes to go more with the conceptual ideas then the mathematical part and all of his questions are either from the homework or the concepts he talks about in class. You just have to pay attention in class. He is an extremely nice person and very helpful inside and outside of class. He knows what he is talking about and can explain it very clearly. But do not underestimate his tests. They are not hard but they are not easy either. It is just easy to make a mistake on them. He is very fair and extremely STEP-BY-STEP in his approach while teaching. I would recommend him STRONGLY RECOMMEND him especially if you haven't had great physics teachers in the past. He helps you establish your physics base pretty well. THANKS PROF. CARTER.
