Professor Burnett was a pretty good lecturer and an overall cool guy. He made lectures enjoyable and it didn't hurt that the course material was pretty interesting. The course reader, although long, contained articles that I actually wanted to read. Burnett encouraged us to look at why the world works the way it does through a completely different eye than we are used to. Regan Maas was a good TA...she made discussion enjoyable, knew her stuff, and actually cared about her students. The midterm and final were very straight forward, especially if you go to the review sessions. I would definitely recommend him.

this was not a bad class at all, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK because you won't need it. however, you MUST GO TO EVERY SINGLE LECTURE OR GET THE NOTES FROM A CLASSMATE to get an A on the tests, you have to memorize the lecture notes (40 pages for the midterm) + (30 pages additional for the final) and also, read and highlight all of the discussion readings. it is like 10 definitions, 12 short answers for midterm , and 10 definitions, 12 short answers, and 2 long answers for the final. the thing is that once a week during discussion youll have tow rite a 2 page analysis of the discussion readings, which are a joke because u can completely BS it and get full credit. but make sure u read the discussion readings and understand them because they will pop up as short answers on the tests. I have around a 3.4 GPA and i got an A, but i studied pretty hard for the tests, maybe 3 days for 5-6 hours each day.

Professor Burnett is very funny and engaging. The class material is interesting by itself, but he makes lecture enjoyable and worth going to. Preparing for the all-essay mid-term and final is exhausting but rewarding since the material stays with you. I strongly recommend taking one of his classes, especially Geography 133 because he brings a lot of life to it!

I took Burnett for 156 Geog of LA my first semester as a transfter student and LOVED this class. Not only was the material interesting, lectures were informative and engaging. Quite a bit of work was required to prepare for the in class midterm and finals (Short answer - literally bullet points would work, and essays), but I learned A LOT, and it was worth it. When I saw that he was teaching 183 Geog of Europe, I signed up immediately. What a mistake that was. 183 turned out to be a huge disappointment. Not only was the material all over the place, but Burnett did not have the same enthusiasm and interest in this class as he had in the other one. The only book was a reader that was over $100 and most of the selections were excessively long and boring... The midterm was a killer and the final was even worse. There were 20+ "possible" ESSAY topics to prepare for, with 6 to write on during the test. You better have a good memory to pass this class! I wrote essay after essay on the in class 8:00 am final until I couldn't feel my hand any longer. Seriously, this class will give you carpal tunnel and you will be drained by the end.

I had heard good things about Professor Burnett and was thoroughly disappointed. The class consisted of a midterm, final, and weekly Economist write-ups that were collected at the end of the quarter. It was not difficult to do well on the exams because we got the essays to prep ahead of time, but 21 essays to prep for the final was ridiculous! The main problem with this class was that we did not learn anything; Professor Burnett showed absolutely no enthusiasm for the subject (Europe) which had potential to be very interesting. He did not seem to care if we learned the material or not; he was never in office hours and did not return emails. He had prepared slides that he just went through without expanding upon them or giving us a chance to understand the information because we were furiously copying down the slides. In the past, I had positive experiences with the geography department, but this class both frustrated and disappointed me.
